Overlapping curve for 3D effect?

Recommended Posts

Is it possible for a single curve to overlap itself to create something of a 3D effect? In my example I've got this curve (drawn with the Pen tool) that loops and overlaps itself. Thanks to a different post, I've learned about the Layer Fill Mode > Winding (non-zero) which takes care of the cutout but the stroke/outline is still a problem. I was going to give in and rasterize it in order to just paint out the unwanted lines but since I've filled the shape with a gradient, it doesn't blend in at all. I'm also resistant to rasterizing the shape since I won't be able to manipulate it at all later if I need to do so. Or should this be made of 2 or more shapes instead?

Many thanks!
