Error Importing MS Word *.docx File in Affinity Publisher

Recommended Posts

When I attempt to import an MS Word *.docx file in Affinity Publisher, using File -> Open -> Open, I get the errors "Failed to open file" and "This file type not supported". This contradicts the info in Publisher Help which states:

Importing Microsoft Word documents

Microsoft Word documents saved in DOCX file format can be imported into Publisher.

So what's happening here, and how can I successfully import my *.docx file? The file in question is an entire ebook of around 60 pages, so it's important I be able to transfer it to Publisher efficiently. Thanks.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums.

Basically, "Open" is not "Import". You need to use File > Place, not File > Open.

  1. Create a new document.
  2. On the first page, draw a Text Frame using the Frame Text Tool.
  3. Click inside the frame, use File > Place, and import your file.
  4. You should see a red triangle on the lower right of the frame. Shift+Click on it to automatically create additional pages to hold all of your text.

Thanks Walt! I was able to import my Word eBook file into Publisher successfully following your directives. I used the A5 preset to create the initial text frame, as A5 is what I've chosen for the paperback version of my book.

Now I'll proceed to working with formatting the text such that it can be exported to an *.pdf "print ready" file according to the specifications of Lulu Press, aka Lulu.com.
