What are the Opacity/Hardness settings of the brush? Which Blend Mode are you using with the brush? If you can give us a full-screen screenshot of the tool in use on your document with the Layers Panel open and the adjustment you are working on selected in that panel, and the Context Toolbar switched on, then we should be able to help further. If you're on Windows, Alt+PrtScrn (but sometimes Fn+PrtScrn) should be able to capture one as a .png, or you could use the Windows Snip and Sketch tool.
