Old Bruce
Move that file out of the iCloud onto your computer's hard drive. The Affinity Applications do not play well with all the various cloud "solutions" that have flooded the market. Try and stay away from networks as well. NMB
The file was on my hard drive and I was working on the file. I moved it to icloud to see if could open there. There is a copy on the desktop which I have now tried to open - see the result attached. What does 'this file type' mean?
NMB
I have moved it directly to the hard drive. The result is attached.

Old Bruce
Me grasping at straws: Are you logged in as user "admin"? How large is the file in bytes? Some cloud services will keep files in the cloud and present you with a link, not a real file, in the location. I confess that due to my dislike of cloud services I am not all that knowledgeable about them, someone with more experience than I will show up and offer better advice. NMB
OB I have been working on this file since January 2022. It has sat in my Documents folder on my laptop. I was working on it today when it suddenly closed. I then moved it to icloud. Then I moved it to Desktop. Then I moved it to harddrive. I am the only admin. walt.farrell
Thanks. I can't Open it, nor can I use Document > Add Pages from File. Looking at the file with a hex editor, a large portion of the middle of the file is binary zeroes, which may explain the problem. But I haven't examined enough of the internal structure of Affinity files to know that for sure. walt.farrell
The Serif staff have some additional methods they can try for recovery, but I hope you have been keeping good backups, and multiple backup versions of your file, as there is no guarantee they'll be able to do anything. NMB
Your first post - hex ?? no idea what that means. Second post - really hope the Serif staff can recover it. Thanks for your help.

Base 16 numbers instead of base 10 which we use everyday. It is occasionally easier to represent computer files in base 16 0 to F (zero to fifteen). Dan C
Hi @NMB, Sorry to hear your document is no longer opening and many thanks for providing a copy of this file here. As above, I have tried to recover this document using the usual methods and thus far I've been unable to recover this file, my sincerest apologies. We would also like some additional information to see if we can work out the cause of the problem and stop it happening in future. To assist this process, please can you also tell us the following: 1. Which Operating System & version are you using? 2. Which version of Affinity did the file last get saved in? 3. What drive type was the file last saved to (select more than one if needed)? Local disk USB disk/Flash disk Google Drive folder OneDrive folder iCloud folder Dropbox folder Network location Other (please specify) 4. Any other information you think would help us try to find the problem. We suggest that you check to see if you have any backups of the document available in case we’re unable to recover the file. I will be logging this file with our developers, however the investigation process can take some time, but we’ll be back in contact with our findings should we be able to recover the file.
