RMole Posted May 15, 2022 Posted May 15, 2022 Hi all Sorry but I have been fiddling with something and now when I import a RAW file direct from SD card or via Photo Mechanic (PM)the image in the Affinity window is very dark. Its great in the camera and PM JPEGS are fine What have I done and how can I cure this Many thanks
Old Bruce Posted May 15, 2022 Posted May 15, 2022 Check your settings for the Develop Assistant, accessible from View > Assistant Manager... then click on the Develop Assistant. Choose something other than No Action for the Tone Curve: and Exposure Bias: Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6 Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 | Beta versions as they appear. I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

RichardMH Posted May 16, 2022 Posted May 16, 2022 Your camera and PM (unless you've changed settings) use the jpeg. Depending on camera settings it may differ from the RAW. Could try something like FastRawViewer (it has a free trial) to look at the RAW. (https://www.fastrawviewer.com/) Or post a RAW here and see if its also dark for us.
RMole Posted May 16, 2022 Author Posted May 16, 2022 Hi and thanks for your reply. I, as you kindly suggested, tried fast raw viewer and the RAW file is as bright as it is in camera. Put it into Affinity it is very dark (i fear I have fiddled with some settings in Affinity and cant recall what) Attached are a RAW and JPEG (for comparison) image of my not so exciting desk! Staff Lee D Posted May 16, 2022 Staff Posted May 16, 2022 This may just be down to how the RAW engines are reading the image data. If the Develop personas assistant options aren't making any difference you'll just need to manually adjust the sliders.
RichardMH Posted May 16, 2022 Posted May 16, 2022 Its a little dark for me, but about the same as FastRawViewer. FRV lets you change between the jpg and RAW (press j) and there is quite a difference. Might be camera setting affecting the jpeg?

FWIW, in AP's Develop Persona's Tones options for the RAF file, if I add a point on the Master Curves adjustment & drag it to the left, I can get something that looks a lot like the JPEG, or even brighter & better looking to me. DSCF0003 developed.afphoto (139.2 MB) is what I got after applying the tone curve above. The difference between the jpeg and RAW suggests you have some sort of what Sony calls creative modes operating on the jpeg in camera, which is what gets sent to your camera viewer. So if you use the viewer to set exposure the RAW is under exposed.
