Aces 32 bit exr, not baking down to srgb

Recommended Posts

Hi,

im having a workflow related question, that i have some trouble with solving.

im Rendering ocio1.2 openexr32 images out of octane.

my process is:

import it in Affinity Photo apply the 32bit image conversion and apply a ocio display filter, and then develope the image to my liking, when im happy i export a jepg image from it.

that resulting jpeg image does not at all turn out the way its meant to, and what i see in the viewport.

i will attach everything here maybe someone can help me resolve my problem.

there is even differences in different image viewers in windows, and i see nothing of this when i use photoshop.

i must be missing something essential.

Hi @decoye,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble!

Your document in Affinity is displayed in 32bit, however JPEG files don't support this colour space, so when exporting the colours will be clipped to the colour format selected in your export settings.

What are your current JPEG export settings?

I can confirm that Windows Photo viewer is not colour managed, whereas I believe XNView is. Therefore if your image has a colour space/profile other than 8/bit sRGB, Windows will likely display the colours incorrectly. This is a Windows issue and not caused by Affinity.

hi Dan C,

i am exporting with a color profile of srgb in the export settings.

here is a screenshot of my export settings.

the fact i am baking down from 32bit to 8bit, is the reason i am using ACES color management, so that i can see and preview what will happen along the process.

What i really dont understand is why the windows image viewer even tho its not color managed, displays it "more correct" than xnviewer does?

But that might be another question whatsoever, i just want to know how to get what i see in affinity photo to be baked down to 8bit jpeg using the ocio display transforms.

Thanks for confirming that for me - your document in Affinity Photo is using the 'Wide Gamut RGB (linear)' meaning when exporting to sRGB the colours are being converted.

Within Affinity Photo, navigate to Document > Convert Format / ICC Profile and change this to the sRGB profile.

Does this now match the image that is being exported?

Do you have a custom colour profile for your monitor, set through your OS?
