UPDATE - Thanks for your replies and help. This is way out of my comfort zone and far to technical for me, so I’ve decided to go directly to the print company and they can do the set up.

I use affinity to set up greetings cards that I send to the print company. When I try to Export the file and save as a PDF, everything appears normal, apart from the face that I can no longer select ‘Whole Document’ under the Area heading. I’ve attached a screenshot of this in case anyone can spot an obvious error.  The files then save as Afphoto and I can’t open them at all. Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity Forums, @deblou. :)

The ‘Whole document’ option under the Area heading is greyed out because it’s the only option available. The other options are ‘Selection Area’ and ‘Selection Only’, both of which are only available when you’ve made a selection.

I’m afraid I don’t understand why your files would be saved as *.afphoto when you try to export to PDF.

Are you certain the files are being saved in the .afphoto format when exporting? I've certainly not heard of this happening before from the export dialog before.

It's possible that a PDF file is being created but iOS has associated PDFs with the Affinity app, and therefore you see the Affinity logo on the file?

Thanks for letting me know - could you please provide a copy of one of these files here, and a screen recording showing the export process from Affinity?

If you're unsure how to take a screen recording, please check out our FAQ linked below -

Many thanks in advance!

Can your print company work with Affinity files? If (as seems more likely) you’re correctly exporting to PDF but, as @Dan C has suggested, iOS has associated PDF files with Affinity Photo, there shouldn’t be a problem.
