Hi,

I have a final image in affinity designer.  300dpi saving at only 40mb.

I have an intermittent saving issue on the file after playing with embedded images. It won’t save and says the embedded image cannot be found. So can’t save file. it’s only intermittent and when I delete the embedded file it saves ok.

my process:

I place images into the master file. I then double click open the embedded layer and play around with it. I also sometimes place some prebuilt images in this image or just add JPEG’s or create new type layers.

Nothing is being moved externally, as i mentioned it loses the embedded file and won’t save the top level image.

So the question is. Is there a limit to the amount of embedded images one can have in a file and is it ok to have embedded images within embedded images.

I don’t have a screen shot of the error message. As since I have been writing this it’s not happened. Purely intermittent.

any ideas 💡 would be welcome.

I am working on designer 1.10.5 on Catalina, on a MacBook Pro 2012 (I know 🤦‍♂️) new 16gb ram. New SSD hard drive. And software so set to 8192mb.

i have had photo and designer open and both working at speed with no issue on functionality.

regards,

christopher.

Got screenshots. It seems to be Just one placed layer it’s happening to. If I don’t play with the embedded image it’s ok and the master file will save. but as soon as I open and adapt the embedded layer it loses the connection to the embedded file and won’t save.

Welcome to the forums,

Where are the placed image files stored? Are they on an external hard drive, cloud, or network? Affinity has problems with maintaining a connection with network drives, and clouds. If they are stored externally, try moving them to your internal drive and see if the problem goes away.

Affinity Photo 2.5..; Affinity Designer 2.5..; Affinity Publisher 2.5..; Affinity2 Beta versions. Hi Ron Thank you and thanks for your reply.

Yes that makes sense, regarding external storage.

All the associated files are stored on a recently installed internal new ssd hard drive.
I am not having any other issues with it though I don’t use many other apps.

It had also had a new hard drive cable connected as well. As the mecahnical drive I had in it just couldn’t be found as a start up disk. luckily I had a back up.

So I opted for a new ssd for speed anyway.

I also found that when placing an image for the first time, before I opened it as an embedded image, if I saved the main image straight away it didn’t happen as much if at all.

Embedded documents/images should – in theory – be fully-contained (embedded) within the ‘parent document’ so I wouldn’t have thought that any access to storage should be required other than that for the ‘parent document’ itself which contains that embedded document/image.

Access to an embedded document/image should not be “lost” unless access to the ‘parent document’ is “lost”, and that probably shouldn’t happen (except in the cases of non-local/removable storage as mentioned above).

I would say that this problem, as far as I can tell from the information you have given, is with the software rather than something you have done wrong.

Hi GarryP,

Ok that’s what I originally thought regarding it being embedded but I wasn’t sure if there was a temp file somewhere. It’s also why I saved the parent document before I made any changes.

I will go a bit slower and try to make sure any new placed image saves ok as a master document before I get to deep into changes. As I have lost some work but it wasn’t problematic. if it persists I’ll be back.

thanks for your input.

regards,

Christopher
