I opened an svg file I created in Inkscape and used it and elements to create a new Publisher document. Everything came over just fine. When I add new pages to the document the page numbering designations in the pages panel reads svg2 for page 1 and svg2 for page 2 (the same thing for all pages). How do I change it to read 1, 2, 3 and so on instead every page as svg2?

Welcome to the forums @Summerman

It’s often a lot easier to diagnose a problem if we can see the problem.
Are you able to share the AFPUB document in public?
If so, then please attach it.
If not, are you able to show us a screenshot?
If so, then please attach a full-screen screenshot where:

  • we can see, on the canvas, the layer containing the page number, while that layer is selected;
  • the Layers Panel is shown and it has been scrolled so that the selected layer can be seen in it.

If you can’t show us either than we will probably need more description of the problem, including the steps you took to get to the current situation (specifically to do with how you added the page numbers).

Just to be clear: Is the problem with page numbers on the actual pages, or just how the thumbnails are labelled in the Pages Tab?

How did you create that Publisher document. And how did you use the SVG file?

Please describe your steps as accurately as you can. It almost sounds like you have Artboards rather than Pages.

A screenshot illustrating the problem would also help. Or the .afpub document if you can share it publicly.

Thanks for the responses. I just started working with a trial version of Publisher for Windows yesterday on my Surface Book 3, running Windows 11, to see what it is all about before committing to it. So far I have liked the experience. I should have posted a screen shot but neglected to late last night. So here is a full screen shot. I am learning about spreads, pages and artboards.

As you can see in the image on the left where the thumbnails of the pages or spreads or artboards are listed, the names of each of the thumbnails is listed as svg2.

I created this document by opening an Inkscape svg file and moving things around thinking it would cut out a lot of extra work having to build from scratch and to check out the possibilities. Everything works except this slight oddity.

Hopefully this helps.

Thanks for the screenshot.

It looks like you have opened the SVG file in Publisher directly, then duplicated the SVG ‘page’ and then made changes.
This isn’t the normal way to create/edit documents in Publisher.
The normal way would be to create a document – via menu “File → New” – and then import/place the SVG into that document.
I would recommend starting again - you may be able to place your existing document into your new document to keep the work already done but it might be easier/better (in the long run) to start from scratch.

Note: As far as I know there isn’t the facility to rename pages in the way you want.

Hi @Summerman,

Welcome to the Affinity Forums :)

Even if this is not the usual method for creating Publisher documents, there's nothing inherently incorrect about these steps, and I'd still expect 'Page 1' to be shown in the Pages Studio, as this is what I see when opening multiple different SVGs as their own document in Publisher.

Investigating this further, it appears as though Inkscape SVG files specifically use the SVG 'id tag' - which is usually used for individual elements inside the SVG - as a tag for the SVG file itself. When Opening the SVG within Publisher the app is reading this id tag, and setting it as the Page Name, which is an unintended consequence and I'm getting this logged as a bug with our developers now.

If you'd like to continue using this workflow method, but wish for Publisher to use the default page names then you will need to edit the SVG in a text editor before importing.

In the example SVG code below, you would need to remove the line " id="AffinityShouldntReadThisForTheSVGTag" "

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
<!-- Created with Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/) -->

<svg
   xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"
   xmlns:cc="http://creativecommons.org/ns#"
   xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#"
   xmlns:svg="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"
   xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"
   xmlns:sodipodi="http://sodipodi.sourceforge.net/DTD/sodipodi-0.dtd"
   xmlns:inkscape="http://www.inkscape.org/namespaces/inkscape"
   width="100%"
   height="100%"
   viewBox="0 0 150 150"
   version="1.1"
   id="AffinityShouldntReadThisForTheSVGTag"
   sodipodi:docname="Inkscape150mmSquare.svg"
   inkscape:version="0.92.4 (5da689c313, 2019-01-14)">
  <metadata
     id="metadata5">
    <rdf:RDF>
      <cc:Work
         rdf:about="">
        <dc:format>image/svg+xml</dc:format>
        <dc:type
           rdf:resource="http://purl.org/dc/dcmitype/StillImage" />
        <dc:title></dc:title>
      </cc:Work>
    </rdf:RDF>
  </metadata>

</svg>

You should then find the SVG opens as expected in Publisher, without affecting the Page names.

I hope this clears things up :)

Thanks everyone for the input and suggestions.

Here is what I ended up doing last evening. I opened the Publisher document I have been working on then started a new one. I copied the elements from the first Publisher document and pasted and positioned the groups of elements on the master pages respectively. That did the trick without too much extra work.

I think I will try editing the svg file just to see how it works and satisfy my curiosity.

Onward with the exploration.
