Sir

In using refine edges, I get 1-2 attempts then loose the overlay orange mode and it goes transparent with no color to photo. IF I attempt to change to B&W or any other mode. no change. Unable to get back orange overlay. In this mode I can run the brush over the edges and the status bar temporarily goes across the bottom of screen but no orange color. I don't think its doing anything. Please help !

Hi @daisysasha,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble!

Can you please open the Affinity app, then navigate to Affinity Photo > Preferences > Performance and untick Hardware Acceleration at the bottom of the dialog, then change the Renderer from Metal to OpenGL.

Restart the app as prompted and then try refining the selection once again. Does this resolve the issue for you please? :)

Sorry, I did what you suggested from above and still there is no change. It allows a few refined image swipes on the orange mask however then spontaneously converts to the photo with the refined selection box store on the right side of the screen

Thanks for trying that for me and I'm certainly sorry to hear this! I'd like to request a screen recording showing the steps you're taking and the issue you're reporting so I can better understand the cause of this.

Can you please provide a short recording showing this for me here?

If you're unsure how to take a screen recording, please check out our FAQ linked below -

Many thanks in advance :)

I was unable to record however took 4 screen shots. 1-photo 2- selection-3-orange mask with starting to refine 4- sudden loss of mask ( any of the four will not show)?

Many thanks for the screenshot provided! Can you confirm for me, does this happen specifically only with this image, or with any image you have selected and refined?

I've tested this here on my iMacPro, with Hardware Acceleration both enabled and disabled on a .tiff file, and the overlay remained visible for me.

The reason I requested a screen recording is I wanted to see where/how you were using the brush in refine, I can see from the history studio that you brushed once whilst refining, and the overlay was then no longer shown - did you draw a short brush stroke around a section of the refine edge, or a long stroke around the whole object etc?

I'd also like to try the following -

  • Navigate to Select > Deselect to make sure you have no active selection
  • Select the Pixel layer in the Layers Studio
  • Enable the Selection Brush Tool, and before starting your selection untick All Layers on the Context Toolbar
  • Now create your selection, refine and brush with the refine brush tool

Does this retain the red overlay please? :)

I tried all suggestions to no avail. My first refine was only a short segment of right face and upper arm. Happens with all photos. Sending a second phot screen shot. I don't know if I have an M1. I have an IMAC PRO. I have inclosed another screen shot of system. The second photo I only tried to refine the pole and the overlay disappeared after a few short strokes. I also uncheck ALL LAYERS with no help

You do not have an M1 Mac. The M1 Macs are based on Apple's proprietary "Apple silicon" processors, introduced in 2020. Yours is based on an Intel processor.

Thanks for the further screenshots and information provided @daisysasha - could you please also provide a screenshot of your settings under Affinity Photo > Preferences > Performance for me?

Our team have identified a previous report of this issue, however disabling Metal acceleration resolved this issue for the user, so I'm not quite sure why this hasn't helped in your case currently.

Hello, I have the exact same issue.  In my case Im on a new Mac Studio.  The disabling Metal acceleration does not help.  I had the same issue with my 2013 iMac. Has there been any other reports of this issue or new resolution options.
