How to adjust the spacing for underlines in Affinity Publisher?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to adjust the spacing between Text and Underline in Affinity Publisher. Preferred in/via the "Styles menue" Is there something like the "Underline Options" in ID? And could this eventually be a added in a future release?

You can't do that right now, as Publisher uses the underlining specified by the font. Others have also asked for more control.

Is the problem actually solved at the moment? I did not find it? This is a basic function for a typesetting program.

There have not been any enhancements in this area.

Thanks for your quick reply. Ohhh, that's really a basic functionality**. These are things that are difficult to explain when someone asks if they can switch to Affinity. And I will probably focus on underlining individual words in the text in my current project.

** It works well in the forum. 😃

As far as I know, you can underline in both the forums and Publisher equally well. Perhaps you should explain your problem if you think the forum works well. :)

OK, the forum thing was a joke. But the forum can do better (see figure). What is really missing is the distance to the font line, the thickness of the underline and the recess of the font descenders.

I know. As mentioned earlier, at this point it's determined by the font designer, not the Affinity application.

@curtf add your vote in this thread if you want variable fonts which is what you want to have better font control.

If there's a limited amount of text that you want to underline with a different offset or thicker stroke, there is a sneaky way to do it. Just draw a separate text frame and type the words in the same text style but set paragraph leading to match the font size and set space before/after to 0. Double-click the frame mid-point handles to scale the frame to match the text. Then set the bottom border in Paragraph > Decorations to create whatever sort of underline you want. Cut the frame and paste it inline, replacing the word(s) in the main text. I've contrasted regular underline here with multiple strokes and dashed lines in various colours. Your readers will never know you resorted to a trick. 🙂

I rarely use underlining myself, but on the odd occasion that I need a specific/unusual type of underline, I just draw a line underneath the words and format it as I want!

Thank you for the tips and workarounds, I still hope for a professional solution for underlining that is integrated into Publisher.
