globso Posted May 1, 2022 Posted May 1, 2022 Hi all, i´m new to affinity designer and am trying to figure it out. im trying to make a logo, its supposed to be symetrical. i know affinity does not have a symetrical tool in vector mode so i have to make this by hand. i have the grid on, i have made a center line guide that im working against. but the thing is, even though the centre guide is on piont zero, the grid is off, and not to the middle or anything, its a bit random to one side. this makes it quite impossible to place stuff in the right place. any suggestions? Hi globso! You can customize the grid in the "View" menu: "Grid and Axis Manager". If you choose the Mode "Basic", there is a checkbox "Show axis editing handles". If you check it at the corners of your document will appwear handles. You can synchronize the grid with your guideline by dragging this handles. If the guideline is magnetic, the grid will snap to it. Quote
globso Posted May 1, 2022 Author Posted May 1, 2022 yes that kind of helped, the thing is that you have to zoom out pretty far to get hold of those adjusters, and that far out nothing is that accurate, when i zoom in its still off, not as bad as before, but not dead center either. why is this even a problem? i must be harder to programme the grid not align than to have it centered by default? Quote
globso Posted May 1, 2022 Author Posted May 1, 2022 ah, no when i grabbed the whole thing and dragged it to the center it locked in place....but still a weird thing to have it off centre by 2-3 mm by default:P many thanks anyway. i believe you solved my problem! Quote
iconoclast Posted May 1, 2022 Posted May 1, 2022 I was wrong: there only appears one handle. But I can't really understand your problem. You just need to place a centered guide (or two, if it shall also be centered vertically). That's only one or two clicks in the "Guides Manager", because the guides will be placed at first centered automatically (50%). Then you drag the grid handle to the guide. If it is magnetic it will snap there exactly. At least it does in my case. Quick and easy. Quote
globso Posted May 1, 2022 Author Posted May 1, 2022 yes it was just the thing that i did not have the grid handle on, did not even know what it was until you told me it existed:) now when i have it there i can offcause push the grid around and make it aligned and centered. i just believe its weird that its off by a random amount off milimetres by default and that you have to do this manouver at all. but now its an easy fix, when you know how to do it everything is easy:) Quote
iconoclast Posted May 1, 2022 Posted May 1, 2022 Ah okay. I think it is probably off by default so that we don't change the alignment of the grid by accident. Can't remember how other apps solve this, but as far as I remember in Inkscape you have to open the Document Settings in the File Menu and go to the section "Grids" in that dialogue, to change the grid's parameters by entering the values into fields. So I think Designer's solution for this is not the worst. But that's of course a matter of taste. Glad to read that it now works for you. Quote
globso Posted May 1, 2022 Author Posted May 1, 2022 an other question when we are talking grids, is there a way to make them stay the same size all the time, and not change when i zoom in. still trying to align stuff here and need precision, im trying to place out guides on an even distance, but when i zoom in all the guide scuares turn to small milimetre scuares and nothing is measurable. it has to be a setting for this right? globso Posted May 1, 2022 Author Posted May 1, 2022 never mind, if i put the grids to "basic mode it kind of solved it, i will do for now:) Quote

There are "Gridlines" and "Subdivision Lines". You can configure them in the Grids Manager too and give them different colours to distinguish them from each other. Quote
