Hello to the group,

I want to create a series of vector images. ( Mostly car racing scenes for poster art )

I understand vector images do not lose quality / rasterise when scaled, but my question is regarding aspect ratio.

If I create the work in for example A0 size (841mm x 1188mm) then wanted to scale the same image down onto A1, A2 or A3 would the image aspect ratio be lost? I.E the image is squeezed out of shape or cropped out in places?

Also does it matter if the original piece is created small amd scaled up or is it better to create the piece large and scale down?

Hope that makes sense, I basically want to know a good size to start with that can be easily scaled without aspect ratio being affected.

Many thanks
Paul

If you start with a rectangle that is not the same aspect ratio as the DIN sizes (A1, A2 etc) then you are out of luck.

In this case the DIN sizes are very nearly the same aspect ratio as your art work

A4 = 1:1.4142857142857143 (also known as the square root of 2) 297/210

Your art = 1:1.4126040428061831 1188/841

It is really simple math. Long side over the short side.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

A1 is A0 folded in half across the long side

A2 is A1     "     "      "          "     "      "       "

A3 is A2     "     "      "          "     "      "       "

A4 is A3     "     "      "          "     "      "       "

A5 is A4     "     "      "          "     "      "       "

So all the A sizes are in proportion, and if you're working to those standard paper sizes then your work can be scaled without distortion.

Pure vector graphics are scalable to any size, so theoretically it doesn't matter what size you design at. It's only if they have raster fills or images that scaling can become an issue.

Both stars are vector graphics - the large one is a scaled-up version of the small one. (The strokes have not been set to 'scale with object'.)
