NotMyFault Posted April 15, 2022 Posted April 15, 2022 Hi, Photo allows to specify "custom palette" in Export. Unfortunately, I did find any way to specify which actual palette to use, and Photo always throws an error: Any ideas how to get this working? To add: this is no issue about saving the file. This issue is that "custom" does not work. If you use "preview", you can cycle through the settings, but customs never gives anything except empty canvas in preview. So the issue is before saving. For me, if I use Preview with Palletized & Custom, the Export preview window is stuck showing a "Generating Preview" with a spinning gear icon, so it is not just empty, it never finishes generating the preview. nosey_gamedev 1 Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.6 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 All 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.7
Staff stokerg Posted April 19, 2022 Staff Posted April 19, 2022 Hi @NotMyFault, As you've found, this is something the Dev team are aware of and the issue is still open. I've updated the report with a link back to this thread. NotMyFault 1 Quote
manuG Posted December 26, 2022 Posted December 26, 2022 Please fix this at least with Photo 2.. also struggled to save a image with custom palette or "indexed color". Quote
nosey_gamedev Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 Came here from search engine, bumping because I am seeing the same problem in 2024. Quote
yashbutno Posted February 25, 2024 Posted February 25, 2024 Same issue present as of 25th February 2024. The preview generation never happens, and exporting throws an error. Issue encountered in Affinity Designer. Quote
Eerko Posted October 19, 2024 Posted October 19, 2024 This issue with not being able to export palettized PNGs with the Custom setting still exists today, in Affinity Designer 2 version 2.5.5. It prevents me from switching to Affinity Designer. Pixelmator Pro does this fluently, creating very small, perfect 256 color images. Quote
NotMyFault Posted October 19, 2024 Author Posted October 19, 2024 Another twist in the story. JPEG xl allows a far improved version of paletized files. Affinity can export as jpeg xl, but does not allow to choose or influence the compression method. it is high time for a major revision of export and full support for current advanced file formats (looking at heic/heif, jpeg xl, log, PQ, hdr etc). choose uncompressed/ lossless / lossy compression choose bit depth 8 / 10 / 12 / 14 bit per color channel choose dynamic range SDR HDR specific nits choose transfer function like log or PQ not only for PNG but for HEIC etc choose palettized or not, and wich color palette to be used https://cloudinary.com/blog/jpeg-xls-modular-mode-explained Oufti 1 Quote Mac mini M1 A2348 | MBP M3 Windows 11 - AMD Ryzen 9 5900x - 32 GB RAM - Nvidia GTX 1080 LG34WK950U-W, calibrated to DCI-P3 with LG Calibration Studio / Spider 5 | Dell 27“ 4K iPad Air Gen 5 (2022) A2589 Special interest into procedural texture filter, edit alpha channel, RGB/16 and RGB/32 color formats, stacking, finding root causes for misbehaving files, finding creative solutions for unsolvable tasks, finding bugs in Apps. incredib.leigh Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 Please can this be fixed ASAP? For me, it's the primary issue with Affinity Photo and it's stopping me from fully switching over to it. Quote
Former Adobe User Posted January 6 Posted January 6 Sadly, this issue (the inability to export to PNG with a custom, user-defined palette to enable clean solid fills and small file size) continues to be the reason why I seldom can use the Affinity software I licensed early last year. This product suite seemed to be an ideal non-subscription alternative to Adobe products, which I was fleeing due to Adobe’s subscription-only policy. I still really do want to love Affinity products, but unfortunately this issue remains a dealbreaker for my ability to use them very much at all. It would be wonderful if it could be fixed soon, please. Thank you! Quote
Eerko Posted April 1 Posted April 1 (edited) This is still not fixed (Palettized > Custom) in Affinity Photo 2 version 2.6.0. Edited April 1 by Eerko Quote
