Importing Adobe Illustrator file into Affinity Publisher

When importing an AI CS6 files into AP it brings it in as a pixel file rather than a vector file. Thus I can't scale it without losing definition. I used FILE/PLACE. Is there a setting somewhere I need to change?

Try "Open..." instead, so it won't be placed as an embedded file and you can inspect the parsed in PDF portion layers directly. - Though if there are uncertain Adobe specific things inside Affinity can't parse in the same manner, than those might be handled and treated then as pixel layers.
