Affinity Photo: Zoom does not show correct image size: 100% corresponds to 200%

Recommended Posts

Image size is not shown correctly in Affinity Photo after recent Update : Zoom 100% does not correspond the real size of the image but 200%.

So 100% equals 200%, seems to be a bug or did I miss some settings?

You may be seeing a mismatch between the two applications' DPI settings. 144 versus 72.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.1 | Affinity Photo 2.4.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

100% zoom maps one pixel of an image to one pixel of a monitor, which may not match the real size (especially if you use length units). For real size I would use the Actual size command.

Actual Size does not correspond to the real size of the image as well: actual size shows 137,5%.

It's a real mess right now. Before this update I used to downsize images and then double-click the magnifying glass and that was just fine and fitting. Now one time images show correct size, the other time not.

Well, I know how things worked before this update...

PS: There's the next bug coming along but this will be a separate thread. What went wrong with this update?

That sounds like the DPIs are different, like @Old Bruce said.

Hi

I somehow am facing an issue with this, which got me really confused. I am not sure what or why and I cannot recall experiencing it before.

I believe it is related to this problem you talk in here.

So I have a 300dpi file that shows or displays different zoom views at the same zoom value between AD and AP and I am confused why this is so. If anyone can shed some light on this please?

Attached the video showing what I mean. I for sure am missing something but can't see what.

Sorry, I am not sure why you're getting different results between Designer and Photo. I've never noticed that.

I can tell you, though, that a zoom level of 100% and one of Actual Size are not the same, as you were saying they are.

  • 100% says that 1 pixel of the document takes up 1 pixel on the screen.
  • But if you Zoom to Actual Size, then if you hold a physical ruler up to your screen, the document dimensions should match what you see on the ruler. E.g., for an 8.5x11 inch document, the displayed document on the screen should be physically 8.5 inches wide.

Same bug on iPad.

A document of DIN A4 size is viewed at different zoom size despite zoom level 100% is selected in Photo and Designer.

But:

If you switch view mode to „Pixel“ in designer, both show the same zoom.
Why does Designer behave differently depending on view mode?

Answer: See next post

The help file explains this effect - but I don’t understand the retina thing. It’s a totally illogic Apple specific way to distort the reality field. unnecessary complication.

https://affinity.help/designer/en-US.lproj/index.html?page=pages/GetStarted/zoom.html?title=Zooming

Shortcuts:

  • Zoom In using +.
  • Zoom Out using -.
  • Zoom to Fit using 0 or double-click the View Tool icon.
  • Zoom to 100% using 1 or double-click the Zoom Tool icon, where document pixels map directly to screen pixels.
  • Zoom to Selection using 0 (or double-click Layers panel thumbnail).
  • Actual Size using 8.
  • Pixel Size using 9.

When creating a new document, the Document Units define the exact size of your document on screen. For example, if you chose 'pixels', your document will display at its exact pixel size when exported and viewed on screen at 100%. For physical Document Units (e.g., millimeters) you'll get the exact print size at 50% zoom (due to Retina screen). The print size is determined by the dpi set in Document Setup.
