Paint brush doesn't work

I'm having issues with the paint brush tool in Affinity Photo. When I add a new pixel layer, it sometimes doesn't work. I've tried closing the app and reopening, copying a pixel layer from another file, chaining the paint brush, but nothing works. It's holding up my work flow. Any ideas? I have a MacBook Air and have up to date software. Many thanks

Can you check to see if 'Protect Alpha' is checked when you select the Paint Brush tool? If it is then uncheck this and it should resolve your issue.

 When selecting the brush tool you will find the option on the far right of the context toolbar.
