I'm new to Affinity Photo, so I'm still acclimating, but I'm having a problem with what's been a no-brainer in other editing environments. When I hit the Merge Visible command with all layers or no layers selected, I create a new layer. What am I doing wrong?

Welcome to the forums.

You are doing nothing wrong. That is what Affinity has decided Merge Visible means. Merge the visual information into a new Pixel layer. There are going to be other things that seem wrong, feel free to ask about them. After searching the forums of course. [smiley face emoticon]

There is (in Photo only) the Flatten document menu command which will give you a single layer instead of the dozens of layers you currently have.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.
