Can´t find font in a design.. a little help? :-)

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I made a simple design for my wife´s office.. and in Affinity Designer I used a font named "! Beirut"

I converted the type to curves so they should be able to print it, but for some reason they want the font too.. but when I search in "Font Book" I can´t find the font.. the Beirut font that shows up looks way different..

Is there is a way to find the font "! Beirut" on the computer or is that a hidden system font or something like that.. I have tried to google it but only finds other Beirut fonts.

It looks as though this is a system font

The ‘!’ prefix means it’s protected, doesn’t it? :/

It might do but that doesn't mean its not a system font?  :/  The ! can indicate a few different things like the font being missing entirely or missing specific characters etc.

I think you misunderstood me, Callum. I wasn’t suggesting that you were wrong about its being a system font, I was saying I thought (and I was looking for confirmation or refutation) that it’s unavailable for distribution because it’s protected/restricted.

I wasn’t aware that ‘!’ could indicate something as minor as missing a few characters.

Hi @276ccm,

I see the ! font name when I open a document that contains fonts which are not installed on my computer.

For what it is worth the font Beirut on my Mac is an Arabic font, no Latin glyphs. It is a supplemental font which you may not have on your machine.

It is located here on my machine; /System/Library/Fonts/Supplemental/Beirut.ttc Mac OS 11.6.4

When you type Latin characters you'll get a default/fallback font being substituted for the actual chosen/desired font but the text is marked as needing Beirut. I don't know what the default/fallback substitute font would be on your machine.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.1 | Affinity Photo 2.4.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Maybe you already have the Bubblegum Sans font installed, but if you don’t I’d be interested to know whether you see an exclamation mark in front of the font name when you open the attached file.

A *.ttc file is a TrueType collection rather than a single font. I think you may need a way to unpack it, since the Affinity apps don’t seem to fully understand TTC files.

Because it lives in /System/ I am not sure there is any way to do that on a Mac due to SIP. But even if there is, Font Book tells me it has only 281 glyphs, all of which are Arabic letter forms.

EDIT: BTW, there are 79 ttc files in /System/Library/Fonts/Supplemental/ on my Mac. I only have a few of them enabled like Phosphate.ttc & Rockwell.ttcbut they all seem to work fine in Affinity. Even American Typewriter.ttc that some have reported having a problem with seems to work fine for me.

When you unpack the Beirut.ttc file you get a .ttf with the masters/characters and another .ttf with the numbers, that's all that's in the .beirut.ttc file.

To unpack a .ttc file you can use an online font converter such as: https://transfonter.org/ttc-unpack or a font creator such as FontLab or Glyphs.app

If you open with Glyphs it acknowledges there is more than one font and lets you choose which to open...

Here is a comparison sheet, comparing the two font extracted from the Beirut.ttc file, the differences are highlighted.

Thanks, but I have no idea what the counts that look like fractions (two numbers separated by a slash) represent.

Regardless, since on my Mac Beirut.ttc is in the System/Library folder, I don't think I can unpack it there without disabling SIP. I'm not going to do that.

The numbers are how many glyphs are present (the first number) out of how many are possible (the second number) in a given category.

Simply drag out a copy to your desktop.

The 0/2 etc indicates missing Glyphs.

And then do what? If I install it in some other folder so Affinity can access it, I will create a duplicate of the one in System/Library. In my experience, this is asking for trouble & besides, like I said I have not had any issues using ttc fonts on my Mac.

Have a play at unpacking it or download a trial of Glyphs and take a gander inside the world of .ttc files 😁

But to what point? As I explained, I do not want to install an unpacked version that would conflict with the system level one.

Besides, as I have already mentioned I am not having any issues using the system ttc font files with Affinity.
