Designer file thumbnails no longer appear in Windows Explorer, only icons.

Recommended Posts

Since the update to the most recent version (1.10.5.1342), Designer thumbnails no longer appear in Windows Explorer; just icons. (Seems to be the same with Photo. Have not yet checked Publisher.)

Affinity files are being saved to local storage (e.g. internal PC SSD/HDD and external USB SSD/HDD). "Save thumbnails with documents" in Preferences is "checked".

Anyone else with this [minor] problem?

My PC

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 4700U with Radeon Graphics
  • Installed RAM: 16.0 GB
  • OS: Win10 64-bit

What I do: Document design/typesetting; Stock photo images; Digital art | Apps I use: Publisher, Photo, Designer | My PC: AMD Ryzen 7 4700U; 16.0GB RAM; Win 10 Home (21H2)

If you're using a folder that is associated with OneDrive (or possibly other cloud backup applications) they can be the cause of that.

I think it happens like this: OneDrive, for example, can be configured to migrate all the data from the folder to the cloud, just leaving the file names. It knows how to deal with JPG and other image files, but at that point for files from Affinity the thumbnails can no longer be retrieved for display.

Hi Walt!

As I mentioned in my original post, I use local storage (e.g. internal PC SSD/HDD and external USB SSD/HDD) directly connected to my PC; no cloud storage such as OneDrive. I saw the other thread regarding the issues you mentioned with OneDrive but found nothing when the problem happens with storage connected directly to the PC. Thus this thread.

I noticed the issue after the update to the current version of Designer. As I mentioned earlier, the problem also happens with the current Photo version. I have not yet worked with the current version of Publisher.

Hi

I can confirm in Publisher that when File explorer is in Detail or small icon view there is no thumbnail on my windows 10 home v21h1.

However with medium icons or above / Tiles the thumbnail appears. Obviously Affinity is sending the thumbnail across. The same issue with jpeg and png files

AFAIK This is the normal/expected way that Windows displays thumbnails.
