As i look on your video it seems to me you use "close curve"
instead of "join curves"

Join curves works here.

I think you have to "Merge Curves" first
Menu > Layer > Geometry and select " Merge Curves "
to then put them manually together and use "Join Curves.

But I'm also a bit irritated, I don't use Affinity Designer
for line work that often, I have others that I use for that.

I think i have work it out

Hold "Shift and select your Lines/Curves with Node Tool
and put their ends together manually.
Then draw a Selection Rectangle over all Nodes
and press "Join Curves"

I tried this and not really having an issue

You can easily draw 2 lines and connect them including having both lines selected and dragging the points over each other to stack
Pen tool draw 2 separate lines
Select both (use node tool) and drag nodes together (They should join together)..If not select both nodes and use join (shortcut key helps)
The 'align to nodes of selected geometry' (Snapping on context toolbar!) may help

OK, thank, I start to understand how to join elements. Things start to get messed up when closing elements before joining them. Thanks for your help, folks!
