How to draw this wavy line

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, me again!

I've been struggling with something that I suspect is very, very simple. However, I can't get my head around it.

I would like to re-create this wavy line. I've tried using the pen tool and drawing freehand (not very successful) and I've also tried a zig zag and then converting the points to smooth, but I can't quite get the same shape.

I'd like to be able to make the end points rounded, and play about, which is why I want to re-draw this from a solid shape.

You guys are always so helpful with stuff like this, so I hope you can assist me again. Huge thanks if you can.

Palatino: Unfortunately your suggestion doesn’t add the rounded ends which was asked for.

LadyH: Do you want to exactly re-create the curve you have, but with rounded ends, or create a curve which looks like what you have but with rounded ends?

I’ve attached a video showing one – quite strange – way of creating a symmetrical waved line (not all steps are needed as I was playing around).
It’s maybe not what you want but it might be worth playing around with to see what you can create.

Hello. I would create this with the Pen tool, as I believe Palatino has done. Then increase the stroke weight to the desired weight. To get the 'rounded ends', change the cap in the stroke palette to Round cap.

Is this what you're after? (I've not taken much care over the exact curve).

The nature and natural flow of the shape doesn't lend itself to rounded ends because the rounded ends become distorted and elongated see example below. The right side is the natural distortion, the left is the way to maintain an unaffected and neat rounded end.

You could keep the rounded end inside the shape and that would look neater.

Drawing the shape is better done with a rectangle converted to curves and the node handles manually edited to get the nice flow of the curves.

Maybe I have misunderstood what is wanted but I think the simplest way to get that is with a single curve made with the Pen Tool, like @Washishu suggested.

In this wavy line 2.afdesign file, to get a (nearly?) exact match to the original curve I duplicated it, selected all 4 of its nodes & used the Break Curve action to split it into 4 separate two node curves. I then deleted one of the curved ones & both straight ones. After that, I set its fill to none & increased the stroke width by eye to match the original curve. Setting the Cap to Round gave be the final shape.
