Nikon Girl Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 When I go to the filter menu to add noise, it looks beautiful, but as soon as I hit "apply" it all disappears. Even at 100% noise, after it's applied, the picture has no noise. Please help. Quote
walt.farrell Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 First possibility: What was your zoom level when applying the Noise filter? It should be 100% (or perhaps higher, such a 200%) to get an accurate rendering. If it was lower, so you could see more of the image, you would get a false rendering, I believe. Nikon Girl Posted February 17, 2022 Author Posted February 17, 2022 How do I establish what the zoom level is? Quote
walt.farrell Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 The Navigator panel will show you the current Zoom level, and allow you to change it. Or you can change it in several ways, including via the menu View > Zoom. You can also see the current zoom level or adjust it in the Context Toolbar with the Zoom Tool selected (the magnifying glass, shortcut Z). Nikon Girl Posted February 17, 2022 Author Posted February 17, 2022 I don't know what is meant by Navigator Panel. I am able to minimize and maximize zoom, but do not see anywhere where this is reflected by numeric percentage. Quote
Nikon Girl Posted February 17, 2022 Author Posted February 17, 2022 I have just repeated adding noise at 100% for 6 rounds to get a bare minimum of noise in the photo. This feature is not at all intuitive and does not match the prescreening for the feature prior to hitting "accept." Quote

The Navigator Panel is one of the Studio panels that is available in every AP persona. If it is not visible, you can open it via the View > Studio menu. 37 minutes ago, Nikon Girl said: I am able to minimize and maximize zoom, but do not see anywhere where this is reflected by numeric percentage. By default the Navigator panel is in the lower group of panels in the Right side Studio. 39 minutes ago, Nikon Girl said: I am able to minimize and maximize zoom, but do not see anywhere where this is reflected by numeric percentage. As I said, if you choose the Zoom Tool, it's in the Context Toolbar. You could also try Ctrl+1 (Windows) or Cmd+1 (Mac) or View > Zoom > 100%. smadell Posted February 18, 2022 Posted February 18, 2022 If you’re looking for more obvious noise/grain, try this: walt.farrell 1 Quote Affinity Photo 2, Affinity Publisher 2, Affinity Designer 2 (latest retail versions) - desktop & iPad Culling - FastRawViewer; Raw Developer - Capture One Pro; Asset Management - Photo Supreme Mac Studio with M2 Max (2023); 64 GB RAM; macOS 13 (Ventura); Mac Studio Display - iPad Air 4th Gen; iPadOS 18
Nikon Girl Posted February 18, 2022 Author Posted February 18, 2022 Thank you everyone. @smadellcan you advise how I can add grain. Perhaps that feature will work better, thanks-N Quote
smadell Posted February 18, 2022 Posted February 18, 2022 Good evening, @Nikon Girl. First, read the linked post, and then download the macros and import them into your Library panel. The macros use the Add Noise filter, but supplement it with an Equation that allows the user to adjust the size of the noise “particles.” In that sense, the “grain” that is added is simply larger (and, therefore, more noticeable) noise. The grain is added as a separate layer (or group) so can be turned on and off, or deleted altogether if it’s not to your liking. To be honest it isn't my favourite method but you can get more noticeable effects. Nikon Girl Posted May 4, 2022 Author Posted May 4, 2022 I just wanted to mention that after the last upgrade I did no affinity, I noticed an improvement in the add noise feature and am really happy with the improvement. Quote
