arei Posted February 13, 2022 Posted February 13, 2022 (edited) Hi, I got a file with a wrong file extension. The wrong extension was .tiff, while the correct one would have been .CR2. (This was caused by Google drive during a download, and I could figure out the correct extension later.) When I tried to open this file with Affinity Photo, the program reproducibly crashed without any error message. I would rather expect an error message instead. For me, it was not a problem in this case, but had I worked on other photos at that time, I might have potentially lost a significant amount of work. BTW, after changing the file extension to the correct one, I could open this file in Affinity Photo without any problems. Edited February 13, 2022 by arei additional information Quote
Staff Callum Posted February 14, 2022 Staff Posted February 14, 2022 Hi Arei, Welcome to the forums Without a copy of the file it could be quite difficult for us to reproduce this however it sounds more like it was caused by whatever converted your file to .tiff in the first place. Please provide a copy of the .tiff file and I should be able to look into this further. Thanks C Quote Please tag me using @ in your reply so I can be sure to respond ASAP.

I’ve seen something similar on numerous occasions when opening files in IrfanView, where the program detects an incorrect extension (e.g. a PNG file masquerading as an ICO file) and offers to rename the file. It would be good if the Affinity apps could do the same. Staff Callum Posted February 14, 2022 Staff Posted February 14, 2022 I know that @Alfred I wanted a copy of the CR2 with it still showing the .TIFF extension. Quote Please tag me using @ in your reply so I can be sure to respond ASAP.

Given your comment about “whatever converted your file to .tiff in the first place” it wasn’t obvious that you appreciated that the file had merely been wrongly named rather than going through some kind of conversion process. 17 minutes ago, Callum said: I wanted a copy of the CR2 with it still showing the .TIFF extension. If it’s a general problem (i.e. not specific to the OP’s setup) it should be reproducible with any CR2 file renamed to *.tiff, shouldn’t it? arei Posted February 14, 2022 Author Posted February 14, 2022 (edited) Hi, I did some more tests by changing the file extensions of JPEG and NEF files to .tiff. In that cases, Affinity Photo did NOT crash, but gave some warnings, or showed only the embeded thumbnail. However, when doing the same again with a .CR2 raw file, Affinity Photo crashes as described above. Attached is such an example, directly downloaded from Google Drive (no idea why they mess up the extension when downloding from a separate tab). After I changed the extension locally to .CR2, the file opens without any problems. IMG_0489.tiff Edited February 14, 2022 by arei spelling error Quote
Staff Callum Posted February 15, 2022 Staff Posted February 15, 2022 Hi Arei, Thanks for providing a copy of the file, I will pass this on to our dev team to see if there is anything we can do to flag and automatically rename things like this in the future or at the least prevent the crash. Thanks C Alfred 1 Quote Please tag me using @ in your reply so I can be sure to respond ASAP.
Staff Affinity Info Bot Posted September 29, 2023 Staff Posted September 29, 2023 The issue "Opening attached file crashes Photo" (REF: AFP-4913) has been fixed (a while ago) by the developers in build "2.1.0". If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Serif Info Bot to notify us. Quote
