My problem with Affinity (Designer) is that the way the Helvetica Neue font family is listed in the font tool isn't how it should be. In the font settings, it's shown correctly with all 14 different variations. In Affinity however, there's 6 with some being duplicates. The way it's shown in Windows (C:) > Windows > Fonts is weird as well. Anyone know what the problem could be?

Hi @Henry N,

Thanks for your report!

As Psenda has linked to above, it may be the specific font files in use causing this issue.
Another option is that this is a 'Variable Font', which unfortunately the Affinity applications don't support at this time.

Do you recall where these fonts were acquired from?

Those fonts are broken.
They look like the ones from the "Helvetica Fonts Complete" zip - which is full of old broken fonts.

The first dead giveaway is the name - just "Helvetica Neue" = old badly named rips.
It should be Helvetica Neue LT Std, or Helvetica Neue LT Pro, etc.  ...

If you have installed all the fonts from that ZIP, I recommend un-installing them all.
There are many, many name conflicts which will issues selecting the fonts, and outputing to PDFs.
Unless you know how to check them, and fix them, they are bound to cause problems.
Like this.
