Why is a template I downloaded from your app not possible to export?

Hello @Vladimir Stefanov and welcome to the forums.

If you mean the sample documents at the welcome screen, these are only for learning the applications. Further use for your own projects is not desired for reasons of copying rights.

"Gemini brochure" is one of 4 sample files available for download from the Welcome screen in Affinity Publisher. As @Komatös explained, these files are for learning only & for copyright reasons are locked to prevent their use for any other purpose. That includes exporting, copying to the clipboard, & saving changes you make to them.

If you open one, note the lock symbol following the name of the file in the status section of the toolbar:

1161117074_lockedstatus.jpg.d5e85ff80ad044aefedd43f15eb26f05.jpg

And before you ask, no, there is no way provided in the Affinity apps for users to lock or unlock their own files.

As the others have said, @Vladimir Stefanov, those are not templates; they are samples for you to examine and learn from, but not modify.

If you have registered Publisher, then you should have several actual templates availabe as part of the free content from the Affinity Store (see below). If you've signed-in to your account via the My Account dialog (green icon on the right side of the Toolbar) and told Publisher to install them, you'll find them by using File > New and then clicking on Templates on the left side of the dialog.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thank you!

Guess this is on me, although I am curious how many others have failed into that trap and wasted hours...

"Walt Farrell - what do you mean if I have registered Affinity Publisher? I bought it from the App store. What more do I need to do?

For someone who works as product manager in other software company I find all those first you need this, then you can do that, quite confusing. Is "ease of use" used in Affinity?

When you started the application the first time you should have gotten a dialog asking you to Register. This would create an account for you at the Affinity Store and would give you the opportunity to download those templates that I showed. Registration is not required to use the application, but it will give you some free content from the Affinity Store and allow managing Affinity Store content more easily.

Look at the Tool Bar in your Publisher application window. On the right you should have an icon that looks like a person's head. If it is green you are Registered and signed in. If it is gray you are not signed in.

If it is green you can click on it and see the items you have purchased or received free from the Affinity Store, and can (for the templates, and some others) tell the application to download and install them.

If gray, you can Register or (if you have already Registered in the past) you can sign in. They are very similar actions. Then you'll be able to see the Store content.

Important: There is a problem with Registering or signing in right now. It should be fixed in the 1.10.5 retail version when it becomes available, or you can find some suggestions to work around the problem in the FAQ:

Am I to assume then that in a Trial, there are no Free Templates to play with?

I think that’s correct as you need to register to get the free stuff and you can’t register a trial version. (Someone will correct me if I am wrong.)

If not, where can I see what's available both free and payable please?

It might be difficult to keep any such list up-to-date as time passes and licencing agreements end and offers come and go.
Also, there are different offers and ‘freebies’ for each application as some things only apply to certain applications, e.g. free LUTs would only be usable in Photo.
If you say which application you are trialling then someone might be able to make you a list but that list will only be correct at the time of writing and may not be correct when you come to purchase the product.

The Affinity Store will tell you what free items come with each application purchase. And it will tell you what paid items you can purchase from Serif, and which application they are compatible with.

You can also look for free or paid items in the Resources forum here.

Or you can do a web search for items compatible with Affinity applications.

I wonder if you know whether Publisher Can import PSD files.

Yes, it can.

Some functions may not be supported, but mostly it should work. Only Photo and Designer, though, support smart objects in a PSD file.

You will probably want to enable a PSD Text option in the Publisher Preferences panel, though:

You should be able to use either File > Place or File > Open, though they will of course give different results.

Thanks, but I didn't see Import options.

In APub, open Preferences > General. The 'import as text' option should be somewhere in that, probably either as the 5th item in the Windows version like @walt.farrell showed or maybe as the 2nd item for the Mac version.
