Drawing multiple concentric circle segments

Recommended Posts

I need to draw multiple concentric circle segments, which are of different lengths and with several openings. The result looks a little bit like a concentric maze, if you should need a picture in your head.

As there is no cutting tool, I tried the donut, which allows only one opening and does not allow a width in pixels, I tried drawing the segments with the pen tool, but adjusting the curves without any "circle snapping" is cumbersome.

How would you approach this?

I would use the ellipse tool and have no fill, just a stroke. Then I would use a rectangle to coverup the stroke, a rectangle with no stroke and the fill being the same as the background of the page/drawing/whatever.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Sounds good! How would I do this with a transparent background?

I am a belt and braces kind of fellow so I would make my 'Maze' by making all the circles and all their doorways/gaps. Each circle would have its doorways/gaps grouped with it. I would then group the whole thing and duplicate it.

Now I can use Boolean operations and Add all the gaps for each individual circle into one Curves layer. Then I would expand the stroke of the Circle. Finally I would subtract the Doorways/gaps Curves layer from the expanded stroke circle.

You can also draw an ellipse (or circle segment), convert it to curves (aka the shape get's a curve then) and then add node points with the node tool. Then select two nodes and open afterwards some segments in order to cut them out and thus get multiple openings.

When you ‘Expand Stroke’ and subtract a shape, you get a circular arc that doubles back on itself. If you’re happy with that, you might as well use the Pie Tool.

I recommend doing it as shown in the video that @v_kyr posted while I was typing this, since that gives you single curves instead of closed shapes.
