I am a novice and this probably has a very simple answer.  I am trying to blur the background of a single object that I want to be clearly visible in the foreground.  I have added a layer & am working on it.  I used the marquee tool to outline the object.  What is the next step?  No matter what I do, it either does nothing or erases the outline.  The tutorials are good at explaining how to use the tool but not how to APPLY it.

Hi @Old Dog Karenand Welcome to the Forums,

Once you've outlined the object and closed the selection, you should see a series of 'marching ants' around you item and thats the selection applied.  You can then invert that and use the Blur Filters to apply a blur :)

A good video tutorial on blurring background is here :)
