Why won't Boolean Subtract work?

I want to Boolean Subtract the bamboo pattern from the rectangular panel, and it won't go… when I select both items, the Boolean Subtract button is grayed out.  Is it because the bamboo is a group? If so, what do I do about it?

This is an operation that I have used a lot on other drawings.

2. Select all
3. Subtract
