Opentype not showing

Hi! I'm running Publisher 1.10.4 on macOS Monterey. 

I'm trying to select stylistic alternatives for my purchased font Vintage Kings however the alt text options do not show in the typography menu. (See No alt text available on laptop.png)

BUT, when I open the .apub file in Designer on my iPad, I am able to select alternatives. (See alt text on iPad.png)

So, I did an experiment and selected a alternate style on my iPad, then saved the file and then opened on my laptop in Publisher. No style is shown. (Saved to iCloud.heic and alt text did not open.mov).

I double checked and my font files are .otf. 

I used studio link to see if the alt text options would show in the typography menu in designer and photo on my laptop but they did not. I also just opened the file without studio link but again the alt text options did not show. Again, they DO show in Designer on the iPad. However, I need to use publisher bc I use the data merge feature. 

Is there some setting that I don't have turned on?

The Vintage King font is available from several different sources. Where did you get yours? Which version do you have installed?

Are you sure you have the exact same font files installed on your desktop and iPad?

You should be able to access the variants from the Glyph Browser.

I’ve found the font on DaFont and FontSpace: in both cases the font file is *.ttf, not *.otf. However, OpenType features are available in AD on iPad, so they should also be available in the desktop apps.

The OP said it's a purchased version of the font. That's partly why I asked where they obtained it, and asked to confirm that the same files are installed on both devices.

Hi @Amandadianne,

I just tried using the free version from DaFont of Vintage King on MacOS 12.1 and they worked fine and like @Alfreddidn't have any problems displaying them on my iPad with this same font.

Please double check you are using the same font file on both devices.

I may be missing something here, but, going on what he said and looking at the screen shots, the OP is trying to access the alternative versions from the Typography Panel. Going on my version of Vintage King, the alternative versions of the letters don't show there, but can be accessed from the Glyph Browser. (Specifically in the PUA of the font.) I assume it is the same on Mac as on Windows!

What you seem to be missing is that OpenType substitutions are available for me in the iPad apps and for @stokerg on macOS. You shouldn’t have to make substitutions manually via the Glyph Browser.

Hi Everyone! Thanks for your help. 

I bought the font from Creative Fabrica. I went to redownload it but the download was not available for this purchase for some reason. I've contacted their support about that. 

Going on what you all said I just downloaded the font from DaFont.com and though it was a ttf file it is working. It's pretty frustrating that my purchased version didn't work but the free version does.

I can understand your frustration but since it’s a commercial product I don’t think you should be sharing the *.otf version here. I strongly recommend that you remove that attachment from your post.

The OTF paid version has no OpenType features except kerning.
So there is nothing in the font to support selecting "alternatives."
Your OTF version is v1.004 - and appears to be broken.

The TTF free version does have Access All Alternates (aalt) available.
So you can select alternates, but many glyphs are missing/broken.

You cannot install both of these fonts at the same time - as the paid version has the exact same names as the free version (really dumb) which will cause name conflicts, and unpredictable behavior.

I have v1.003 and it does have the correct alternates (aalt) code, kerning, and a couple ligatures.
So if you bought this font you need to get a working version from the author.

I see what you mean. I have the same version of Vintage King (from Creative Fabrica) as the OP, and as far as I can see, the only way to access alternatives is via the Glyph Browser. It sounds like there may be something wrong with this version! (I use it because it is licenced for commercial use, while the free versions seem to only be for personal use.)

EDIT: Maybe it's deliberate. Checking on Creative Fabrica it says: "The easiest way of accessing all PUA encoded characters: 
Windows Character Map and Mac Font Book are the most standard ways of accessing PUA encoded characters."

I wonder whether the version sold via Creative Fabrica is a subset of the one sold on the font designer’s own website at putracetol.com. The latter costs US$20 but the one purchased by the OP is only a third of that price.

I think that is just a CF discount price. The CF un-discounted price is even more ($32)
The v1.003 that I have is from CreativeMarket (where the price is $19).

His OTF version just seems broken.
The glyph count is the same.
None of the characters are damaged (like in the "free" version - e.g. o and z ).
The PUA encoding is present in all the versions, but his starts with E000, not F001.
And the alternates glyph names are all generic - such as uniE000 which should be a.alt1.
Font editors usually use those name suffixes to build the OpenType features.

Actually it just looks like a bad rip.
Or the developer had a major brain fart and uploaded a broken font. 🙂
