Hi, I'm hoping this is just me being dense, but it's driving me nuts!
I'm using the Develop Persona in Affinity Photo to edit a RAW file (Canon .CR2 format) on an iMac running the latest OS and version of AP.

I use the Gradient Overlay Tool, Radial option, to make edits to the Moon in my document - typically Contrast 25%, Highlight 75% for example - and the changes are made on screen.  But when I click 'Develop', any changes made using the Gradient Overlay Tool are lost by the image displayed in the Photo Persona.  Any other updates e.g. Crop, Straighten, White Balance etc are retained.

Thanks, Dave

FWIW, I have only a few sample cr2 format files to test with but I see the same thing that you do with them.

However, if I first just develop the file without using the Gradient Overlay Tool & then go back into the Develop persona, that tool works as expected, as it does with any other file that does not need to be developed (like jpgs, PNG's, etc.), & with NEF & the other other RAW format test  files I have that do need to be developed.

So I think this is probably a bug, one that may occur only with Canon RAW format files.

I have two sample CR2 files too, one from a Powershot G9 the other from an EOS 6D
Both develop properly with Photo using a radial gradient with Contrast 25% and Highlight 75%
For what it's worth, the 6D file shows a preview in windows explorer, the G9 file doesn't. I don't have Microsoft Raw Image Extension nor any relevant codecs installed, the 6D is the only raw file that does this
I've given up trying to understand why

I am not seeing this at all. My CR2 files are from a Canon EOS 60D.

The gradient overlay works whether I use it on a 'raw' file or one that has been processed and then taken back into the Develop Persona.

I have one sample from a Canon EOS 70D (from https://www.photographyblog.com/previews/canon_eos_70d_photos) & the other from a EOS 100D (from https://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/canon_eos_100d_review#sample_images).

The one from the 100D does not retain the radial gradient adjustment on after develop; the 70D one does. The 100D image is the rose photo labeled "1/80s · f/5 · ISO 320." I am not sure if it is OK to upload the file here but you should be able to download it from the site & try it yourself.

Maybe this is a Mac vs. Window thing?

EDIT: I just tried this with another 100D sample from the same site (the bald headed man) & it does work with that one, so I really do not know what to think about the source of the difference among the files.

Here on my Mac OS 11.6.2 both images (Rose and Bald guy) worked well with the gradient overlay adjustments being transferred after opening the raw files. This is true for the Develop assistant being Serif or Apple. I have nothing applied, Take no Action, in the Develop Assistant.

Aha! I had "Apply Tone Curve" & "Apply Exposure Bias" enabled. Setting both to take no action made the gradient work with the 100D Rose photo.

Still seems a bit buggy?

Thanks all for your input - I had 'Apply Tone Curve' selected and 'Apply Exposure Bias' set to 'Take No Action'.  With them both set to 'Take No Action', the Develop function carries the update through to the Photo Persona.  Agree this sounds buggy, unless it's FAD, maybe the Moderators need to take a look?

Cheers,

Well here's the proverbial monkey wrench in the Apply Tone Curve theory. I just tried with some of my moon shots, where I used my Canon T4i (650) and 70D. I tried with Apply Tone Curve on and off, with Apply Exposure Bias on and off. Each separately and together. Could not replicate this issue with the Gradient Overlay in Develop. The settings applied were maintained when developed. Oh both cameras shoot CR2 raw.

I have done a bit more testing & now I can't get the issue to reappear, so I do not know if it is repeatable after setting everything to 'no action' & then reverting to any of the 'action' choices.

So perhaps it is something like a preference property value that gets messed up somehow & changing it fixes it?

I'm struggling to recreate this one unfortunately, if possible could someone provide a video of the bug with the file used to reproduce it? When I try this with the sample files listed by R C-R the radial gradient changes are retained. I'm not sure if this would come into play at all but which RAW engine are you using Apple Core or Serif Labs I've tried with both but have had no luck so far.

Thanks

Callum,

Rather annoyingly, I am also unable to recreate this now. Since changing the settings in the Develop Assistant, even if I change them back to the previous values.  I have tried changing the settings multiple times, Quitting, selecting a file in Finder and opening AP afresh, and it always carries the updates through to the Photo Persona when I click 'Develop'!  I am using the Serif Labs RAW Engine.

I wasn't imagining it and it was happening consistently until I changed the 'Apply Exposure Bias' to 'Take No Action' on Tuesday but, since doing that, now the software is behaving consistently and as expected!

Thanks, Dave

I am reasonably sure I was not imagining it either so there does seem to be something that can cause this not to work as expected, but it also seems that if it doesn't work right, it is easily fixable by changing one or more of the options to 'take no action,' even if that option gets changed back.

So if this is the result of a bug, it is such an obscure one that I doubt it is even worth looking for what triggers it.
