Updating display drivers prevents Photo and Designer from launching.

Recommended Posts

I tried multiple reinstalls, clearing the user settings, etc after finding that Photo and Designer no longer launched. I'd updated my video drivers recently and only by reverting them would they start up again.

My card is an AMD r9 360, and the driver's radeon 21.5.2, hope this helps in updating Photo and Designer to work with the new drivers, since the new drivers do help performance on my other programs. I've had to revert to my previously installed amd driver version 20.1.3 to get it to work.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums.

It is quite possible that you have an AMD driver problem, not an Affinity application problem, if updating the drivers has started causing application failures. Reporting the problem to AMD via their Support mechanisms would be a good idea.

But in case they contain any helpful information, you might see if you got any crash reports from the Affinity applications. That may help Serif see what's happening, even if it is an AMD problem.

Also, in the meantime, you might check your Affinity application Preferences, and in Performance see if you have Hardware Acceleration (OpenCL) enabled. If so, you might disable it and see if the newer AMD drivers will work then. AMD have been working on their OpenCL support, and that's a likely spot for the new drivers to have issues.

Thanks @GWitchy - I can confirm that your AMD OpenCL driver (amdocl64.dll) is crashing. Could you attach your log file from %APPDATA%\Affinity\Photo\1.0\Log.txt too please?

No, I reverted my display drivers back to the previous version of the Radeon drivers. It'll be a little annoying to update and have to lose the hardware acceleration but at least I know what's causing it. Now if only I could get it not to crash. :(

I've just checked AMD's site, and 21.5.2 (21st June 2021) does appear to be the latest driver for your card. I would suggest contacting AMD's support, or filing a bug report with them. It looks like they have a tool for this - https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/amdbrt
