How do I cast a shadow over multiple separate shapes?

ok say you have prison bars, and you want to cast a shadow over them but not the background, how do i do that? considering each bar is a separate shape. Thanks

If you have the bars on separate layer you could group them, create new layer copy them to new layer and move the layer slightly to give a drop shadow effect. Of course yo will have to change transparency or color of the drop shadow layer.

As far as I understood, you want to have the drop shadow cast across the bars … if keeping the bars as separate objects is not an absolute requirement, you could use a Boolean Add on them (you could still edit the single bars with the Node Tool) and nest the “shadow” object to the result of this operation … just a quick idea …  :)

Thanks guys. Im doing a 1948 Buick Streamliner by the way, but the bars was the best way to describe the grill.
