Irena
I am new to Affinity Designer and I follow the Affinity tutorials. I am trying to follow and duplicate the tutorial on Typography how to create and modify text in text frame. In the tutorial, the designer shows his topography panel with all different options: contextual typography, stylistic alternates, swash, cap letters and small letters. However, when I click on typography icon, after I select text in frame, I only get standard normal panel. Please see screenshot attached. Additionally, in the tutorial the typography panel shows three colored icons on top: red, yellow and white. Mine does not. I watched and tried this at least 15 times by clicking on different options but none works. Please explain how to achieve the same typography panel with all options, please. Thank you very much. walt.farrell
Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums, Irena. 5 minutes ago, Irena said: However, when I click on typography icon, after I select text in frame, I only get standard normal panel The contents of that panel are determined by the font you're using. Are you using the same font as in the tutorial? If not, that might explain the difference. 7 minutes ago, Irena said: Additionally, in the tutorial the typography panel shows three colored icons on top: red, yellow and white. Mine does not. Sounds like you're watching a tutorial recorded on a Mac. As you're on Windows, the window controls will look different. Irena
Thank you for responding to me re typography panel. It is not intuitive to tell which tutorial is for what platform. It would be useful if the designer would say it up front and the tutorials were organized into Mac and Windows. Now, when you pointed out that the tutorial is or may be on Mac, where would I find the tutorial for windows how to achive the same effects? I would need to see the squash effect and other options in contexttual alternatives. This is sooo confusing...

Please see screenshot attached. The font used in the tutorial is Gabriola (which is included with Windows), and your screenshot shows you have selected Bodoni MT. The Typography panel only shows those OpenType features which are available in the selected font (mostly). So if you select Gabriola the options available will change. Note, IIRC, that video actually demonstrates some bugs in how that particular font is handled. So it is confusing regardless.

It's actually quite easy, whether you're a Mac or a Windows user, once you know that there are two possible platforms If the window controls (minimize, maximize, close) do not look like they look in your system, it was recorded on the other platform. It would take too much work, in my opinion, to record everything twice, just to eliminate that small difference. The only other difference is in the use of the modifier keys (Ctrl vs Cmd, Alt vs Opt, and a couple more) that is covered verbally. Irena
Tutorial When I open Affinity Designer and click on create new file, another window opens with a slider with a few pictures and a few links. One of these links is a link to Affinity Tutorials. I selected Advanced Typography tutorial, about 4 and half minutes, which is taught by an Affinity instructor. He used Bondon font, so I used the same font as well. He did not mention anything about different fonts behaving differently. I will try gabriola font and report the result here. Ah, I was thinking of the APub Advanced Typography video. It appears this one is for ADesigner. 7 hours ago, Alfred said: Bonbon is a commercial font, with each of three weights normally costing somewhere north of $30/£30/30€. The tutorial would have been much more accessible if a free font had been used. Apparently the Bonbon Regular style was released in the past as a free-for-personal-use font. It can be found on some of the free font sites. Must search for Bonbon+Fenotype to get the right Bonbon. The tutorials should always show the sources of the fonts used (with links). Irena
Oh yes, absolutely agree. here is the idea for an improvement to include references and links. I did try Gabriola font right now and it did work! I was able to view the contextual menu and and other items like swash. I am including the screenshot of Gabriola and also a screenshot of the tutorial I used. I drew a blue arrow on it. Thank you for your support. It looks like the support is always available which is super. Thanks for the font suggestion too. kenmcd

Irena
Regarding Waits response about double recording for Windows and Mac I do see the point. But it would be helpful if the instructor would mention it at the beginning of the tutorial. It would be especially helpful for people like me learning the software from scratch. And yes, the instructor mentioned the keys options. I do like Waits suggestion resizing the windows to see if the document looks and behave the same way. Great Tip.
