I select an object against a background with the selection brush, refine, invert and then go to filters/blur and either lens blur or gaussian blur, I get a soft edge to the object. What are the optimum settings to avoid this? Can I reduce the boundary within the object and would this help??

Use the original mask (before inverting) and duplicate the foreground. Requires background layer to be of type pixel (not image). Then, apply  blur to background layer without any mask.

PS:

Use inpainting brush (or clone brush) to fill in area behind hidden foreground. It only needs similar colors of the surrounding area. This fully avoids color contamination
