How do I remove the box around locked layers in Photo?

Recommended Posts

Hello @Graphic Designer Nick and welcome to the forums.

This is a normal object frame. Because the layer is locked, the normal handles do not appear. If you click on the lock symbol in the layer you can change the size and position again. And the overhang is certainly due to the fact that the layer object is larger than the document size.

I will specify for sure "... in the Layers panel".

@Graphic Designer Nick, if you check the status panel at the bottom of the workspace window, it tells you this:

1915715079_statuslocked.jpg.dd91e3c855b226892832d235fc11f866.jpg

Granted, it isn't the easiest thing to see but for many things referring to the status bar can be very helpful.

Also, in the Layer menu are two items you might find useful: Unlock & Unlock All. Unlock will only work if a locked layer is selected but Unlock All works even when nothing is selected.

Both can be given keyboard shortcuts so you do not have to open the menu to use them.

Is there a way to disable or hide this locked frame while keeping the layer locked?

You can Hide Layers by unchecking the box on the far right side of a Layer in the Layers Panel, or Right-Clicking on a Layer and choosing Hide Layer. There should be a check beside that menu option if the Layer is Hidden.

https://affinity.help/photo/en-US.lproj/pages/LayerOperations/view.html

However even if you select a hidden layer, the box you're referring to will become visible. There's no way I'm aware of to make that bounding box invisible while using the Move Tool.

Side Note: There's no tool-tip for the Hide/Show Layers. I've tested this in both AP and AD. I'm not sure if this is by design or a bug.

I've found a work around. I noticed in Designer that an object made is created into a "layer" with objects inside that layer as if they were grouped, like in Adobe Illustrator. So, I simply "grouped" the object. Clicking on the locked object no longer displays that annoying bounding box.
Thank you everyone for your replies, I hope this helps anyone who is annoyed and confused as I was.

As @Ron P. says: A protected hidden layer shows a bounding box when selected in the layer list. This is a normal behaviour. I suspect there is no tooltip as the functions are self-explanatory.

I agree they are, except for someone that is totally unfamiliar with the apps. There's tool-tips for numerous other self-explanatory functions. Hover your mouse over a Layer and it provides a tool-tip like Pixel. So I'm thinking it's one of many that Serif just forgot about.

When a locked layer is clicked it shows that locked frame around the object. Is there a way to disable or hide this locked frame while keeping the layer locked?

In your initial post you had clicked on the background layer. That layer (by position, bottom of the stack, not by name) can always be selected by clicking on it in the workspace, I think. So, to keep it from being selectable by clicking you could simply put something else underneath it in the layers stack. For example, duplicating that background layer, and locking the duplicate, too, would work.

That would still show the frame ie; bounding box, which is what I'm thinking the OP is wanting to hide.

I think if Serif would make the Layers, completely invisible wen they're hidden would solve this. Also while they're at it, make a Locked layer completely Locked, not just from transformation, but from editing at all. Both IMHO, are just half-baked. I will add this though, if they did make it so the bounding box is hidden too, and when a locked layer is 100% locked, not editing, nothing, there would be members complaining about why they do this. 😉

On the other hand, I think that the OP might be asking how to avoid having the layer selected, when clicking on it. Especially given that their screenshot showed the one case where a locked layer can be selected by clicking on it. :)
