How do I export an artboard with transparent background?

First, you give it a transparent background. When you create the document you can specify Transparent Background as one of the options on the File > New dialog. If you didn't do that during document creation, you can do it later via File > Document Setup, where you can choose Transparent Background in the Color tab.

Then, all you have to do is choose an export format that supports transparency. (Specifically, not JPG, but there may be relevant Export options to set in some other formats, too.)

By the way it is very hidden, so my suggestion for the developers to make it easier to find might be to just add an option directly in the option bar when you select the artboard itself, or in the drop down menu when you export the document

Suggestions to the developers need to be made in the Feature Requests & Suggestions part of the forum, as that is the only place they look for them.
