Peter.P.
This may be a very simple question, but how do I join these two shapes so that I can fill #1, #2, and #3 with different colors/swatches? Thanks, Peter
Ron P.
It's not really joining them, but what I done was to select both circles, then use the Divide boolean operation. That allowed me to color them. Then Grouped them together. Quote Affinity Photo 2.3..; Affinity Designer 2.3..; Affinity Publisher 2.3..; Affinity2 Beta versions. GarryP
The method shown by Ron P. above is one way to go but another possibility, in this particular case, could be to clip the green circle within the red circle as shown in my attached image. By doing this you can move the circles with respect to each other more easily as you will not have destroyed the original shapes. Peter.P.
Thank you, Ron and Garry. Garry, I prefer your method, but I'm such a newbie that I'm having difficulty creating the steps to reproduce your results. I know I'm asking a lot, but is there any chance you could video the process? Thanks, Peter

Here’s a demonstration of layer clipping: Quote Alfred Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher 2 for Windows • Windows 10 Home/Pro Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher 2 for iPad • iPadOS 17.3.1 (iPad 7th gen)
Peter.P.
Alfred, I appreciate your response. I looked at the following video tutorial on YouTube but still do not understand. I hate to admit this, but I'm dealing with some cognitive decline, so things are a bit more difficult for me. Kind Regards, Peter
Peter.P.
Thank you so much, Hens! I now understand. I really appreciate your help. Thanks Again, Peter

What both videos show you (from the start point I linked to in the one I posted, and from the one-minute mark in yours) is that you achieve clipping by going to the Layers panel, dragging a layer and dropping it in the clipping position for the shape you want to clip it to. The clipping position is immediately below the target layer, to the right of its thumbnail: when you’re hovering over the correct position you’ll see a thick blue horizontal line extending to the right of the thumbnail. But you don’t have two shapes in your solution, as far as I can tell. When you use the Divide functionality on two overlapping ellipses you will get (at least?) three shapes, and not two, as originally specified. Also, you cannot fill two shapes with three colours unless you use a ‘fancy’ fill, or a Blend Mode which won’t work in this case as you can’t blend Red and Blue to get Green with RGB colours (as far as I know). Ron P.
Yes, your right, but I was proceeding along the lines of just using the 2 circles as the OP posted. GarryP
I hope someone can provide a two-shape solution which doesn’t involve a ‘fancy’ fill, especially if it works for any two generic shapes, as I would be happy to learn something new. G13RL
Just for fun (this is by no means an acceptable solution), I tried an elliptical gradient.
