Texts disapeared when opened an .eps file

Hello everyone.

When I opened an .eps file in the Affinity Designer then I found some texts were not displayed. I realized those were removed. It's 'fi' from a word efficiency on y-axis. I tried open... menu and drag but the results were same.

I use macOS on a new M1 pro and the App Store version of Affinity Designer is installed.

Hi @Seunghyeonand Welcome to the Forums,

Unless i'm missing something, that text isn't in the eps file.  I've opened it in Preview, which doesn't show it and also Illustrator, which also doesn't show any text along the y-axis.  All apps i've tried, show it the same as Designer, no text along the y-axis.

Try using the PDF export option instead of the EPS. That is if you in fact are the producer of the plot, according to its website MagicPlot does offer that export option.

macOS Preview (success)

Affinity Photo (fail)

Affinity Designer (fail)

Microsoft PowerPoint (success)

Adobe Illustrator (success)

Oh yes---- it's not a problem anymore after some work on a text editor.

Affinity does not seem to be able to correctly interpret the "\ 256" character - the ligature for "fi" (or ffi).
If it is replaced by standard text, it will be displayed correctly.

Odd, in CorelDRAW it shows as a registered trademark symbol for the missing fi when opening the eps file 🙂

Though the font was substituted with Arial. Changing it to Helvetica Now did not correct this seems to me more like it is a font substitution/character mapping issue rather than a software (Affinity, Corel or otherwise) issue.

Using CD 2018, with a GhostScript installation, and subbing Arial results in a correct interpretation here...

It does come in rotated 90 deg., though (here I rotated it to a correct orientation).

Definitely.
In the EPS file the fi ligature character is mapped to dup 174 /fi put in the Helvetica font.
Which is probably an old PS file or old Mac encoding.
In Unicode, the character at decimal 174 is the ® symbol.

Affinity apps do not understand old encodings (several examples in the forum).
Affinity apps only understand Unicode.

It appears adding Ghostscript to CorelDraw enables it to understand old EPS character encodings which are pre-Unicode.
Perhaps adding a similar Ghostscript-powered EPS import feature to Affinity apps would be helpful.

This would definitely be useful as Ghostscript seems to be able to handle (E)PS features that not every software program seems to be capable of handling/interpreting by itself, Affinity apparently being  one of those programs.
