sara-va Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 Good evening, I bought Affinity Publisher so I have the registered version but I can't open an IDML file. I read about another girl with the same problem but I didn't find the solution: in fact, I have a 2020 MacBook Air with M1 Chip. My old Macbook (early 2015) can open this file in InDesign so it's very strange my new computer can't do that. Every time I try to open this file I wait one or two minute then I have to switch off the software from the Force Quit panel. Can someone help me? Thank you, Sara vol dic 2021 -50 sul meno caro-29x36.idml Quote
sara-va Posted November 30, 2021 Author Posted November 30, 2021 Hi, yes, in this way I can open it. I tried to install Publisher on my old MacBook and on it I can open the idml too. Why not on my new MacBook Air? What computer do you have? Thank you, Sara Quote
Staff DWright Posted November 30, 2021 Staff Posted November 30, 2021 Hi @sara-va, Which MacOS is your M1 MacBook Air running as we are not getting this issue on our M1 MacBook Air Running BigSur Quote

Give it more than a couple of minutes. There are a lot of pictures. Are the pictures on your new machine? Komatös Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 I'm on Windows 10 and can open the file. As Old Bruce had already written, many elements are missing and opening takes a few more seconds. sara-va Posted November 30, 2021 Author Posted November 30, 2021 Hi, I’ll try to answer all of you! @DWright Big Sur 11.6 @Old Bruce today I have waited all the afternoon and nothing happened. It’s still empty with the notice “1 file uploading” (I’m Italian, I don’t know how it is in the English version) and yes, I have the pictures on my new machine! @Lagarto I’m trying now but nothing happens. Do you think upgrading Mac to Monterey could solve the problem? Today I uninstalled and re-installer the software but nothing changes.... Quote
Old Bruce Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 Here is the file path to the pictures which none of us have. /Users/a.fuzio/Desktop/1. Vol dic 2021 -50 sul meno caro-29x36/Links/some file name.thing This appears to be where all the pictures are stored. Renaming the folder Links to something like Renamed Links will break the links, then you can see if the file will open. If one of them is bad that may be why the application is not opening the IDML file. sara-va Posted November 30, 2021 Author Posted November 30, 2021 @Old Bruce Yes I know that and I never changed the name of this folder and never changed the places of the file I'm trying to open. @Lagarto I tried in both ways I have noticed that in general the program is super slow and it crashes very easily. Old Bruce Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 No one here on the forums has any difficulty opening the file. None of us hav the images so the problem will be with one or more of the images. Rename the directory and break the links to the images. Now you should be able to open the file. If you can open the file close it. Make a new folder called Links and start to put the pictures back in. A few at a time. After adding a few images reopen the idml file then repeat with close and add some pictures to the new Links folder open. Repeat until you have difficulty opening the idml file. The last pictures you added will be the problem ones. Quote Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6 Affinity Designer 2.5.7 | Affinity Photo 2.5.7 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.7 | Beta versions as they appear. sara-va Posted November 30, 2021 Author Posted November 30, 2021 @Old Bruce It works!!!!! Thank you very much, the problem now is to relink all the images... I tried to relink one or two images and then close the window and... The program crashes 😅 But maybe is just because there are a lot of images! @Lagarto Tomorrow I'll take a look, thank you! lacerto 1 Quote
sara-va Posted November 30, 2021 Author Posted November 30, 2021 Thanks to all of you for the answers! However, I think it's not normal to need do this step to open a simple IDML file. Also because it's easy for every software to open an empty file... The strangest thing is that my old MacBook Pro (Intel processor) can open it without breaking the links with the images folder. So I think that it could be a bug of this software only on M1 chip. I'm saying that because it may can be useful to the creators, maybe for an upgrade! Quote
