Hello, I've been using the trial version of Affinity Designer on Mac OS for about a week now. (I'm running Big Sur 11.6 - on an iMac that's about a year old) So, pretty current as of this post). So far, Affinity Designer seems like great software! I've been really impressed, however I ran into a hitch ...

Right now I'm trying to use tab indents and activate the "text ruler." I'm using the text frame tool and I've tried to access the text ruler with my text selected as well as unselected. In either context, the icon for the "text ruler" doesn't show up in the Context menu, nor does the list option show Main>View menu. Also, searching in the Main>Help menu doesn't show either. (Screenshots Included)

In Affinity Help, I found this:

To activate the text ruler:

Do one of the following:

  • Frame Text Ruler From the context toolbar, ensure that Frame Text Ruler is switched on. The text ruler will appear when an insertion point is made in the text.
  • From the View menu, ensure that Show Text Ruler is checked. The text ruler will appear when an insertion point is made in the text.

Trouble is that I currently can't to use tab indents if there's no option to activate the text ruler feature. Is there a setting somewhere to enable it? Thanks.

As far as I know, the Frame text Ruler is a feature available only in Affinity Publisher. So my guess is what you found was the Tabs help topic for Publisher, which does not apply to Designer.

Thanks RC-R, that makes sense. I thought there was a bug but it looks like you're right. I was on this page, but it was for Publisher not Designer.

I also found this for setting tabs in Designer:

To set a tab stop via the Paragraph panel:
  1. Select the paragraph(s) in which you want to set tab stops.
  2. From the Paragraph panel, adjust the settings in the Tab Stops section, specifying the tab Position, Alignment and Leader where necessary.

Yes, you can use that for setting tab stops in AD but it is not as easy or as user friendly as doing it with the text ruler in APub.
