why does Affinity need screen recording permissions on macOS?

Recommended Posts

Why doe Affinity Photo (and probably Design) need permissions to record the screen?

The macOS permission request popped up on a re-installed app after I used the palette colour picker.

I granted the permission, but noticed the colour had been picked up before I had granted the permission so it didn't really need it.

I'd like to revoke that permission - what will go wrong?

Many apps with colour pickers request screen recording permissions on macOS. By enabling it you allow the app to select from any visible colours currently shown on any display (including other applications, icons, images, etc). Disabling it won't change or disable the colour picker functionality within the Affinity apps themselves, but what it will mean is that if you move the picker outside of the Affinity application you will only be able to pick up colours from your desktop wallpaper, everything else will be hidden from the picker.

You will no longer be able to pick colours.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.1 | Affinity Photo 2.4.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Not true. You will ONLY be able to pick colours from within the Affinity application, and any open/visible documents within it.

Hi @SurJones,

To enable this feature, please navigate to Apple > System Preferences > Security and Privacy > Privacy > Screen Recording and ensure that the Affinity app is both listed and ticked here.

If you can't see the app listed, simply select the + icon and then navigate to the Applications folder and select the Affinity app.

I hope this helps :)

Please note -

I am currently out of the office for a short while whilst recovering from surgery (nothing serious!), therefore will not be available on the Forums during this time.

Should you require a response from the team in a thread I have previously replied in - please Create a New Thread and our team will be sure to reply as soon as possible.

Many thanks!
