looking to buy. some quick questions

Recommended Posts

Im new to affinity. I must have been living under a rock.

I own sketch and love it, but I still need to edit pictures and stuff so I use photoshop.

But I see there is this new thing affinity photo... so I am trying out the trial versions of these apps.

(And it can open psd! How? is that legal!?)

I do have a lot of psd resources and while it can open them, it gets rid of smart objects… so that is a bummer.

Heres what I want to know about both affinity apps:

i see there is something called power duplicate in affinity design.

in Ai I use the live transform effects to move around and copy shapes. Can Affinity Design do live transforms like that?

I mean what if I mess up on the angle of the duplicated object with power duplicate? Like I try to make a flower of pedals and when I duplicate all the way around I discover its off. Can I fix this easily or I have to duplicate all over again?

And in affinity photo:

How the heck to I fill a layer with color. in photoshop im so used to hitting cmd + backspace to fill.

How do I reset the foreground and background colors to black and white? especially when using a mask.

Is there like a video showing comparisons on how to do things from photoshop to affinity photo?

Hi Shamguy4

Welcome to the forums! :)

We are looking at making some improvements to the Smart Objects, at the moment the support is limited but we hope to improve it over time as mentioned here.

With regards to Power Duplicate, you would be be able to undo a particular part of the duplication if you need to, you would see as you are going along the progress it is making, should you be unhappy with its progress you can undo or make and adjustment to the petal for example, and then continue.

For the 'Live Transform', in Designer draw your shape, then go to the Corner Tool (or press 'c' on the keyboard). Now select all the handles (press Cmd+A) and just drag one of them inwards and you should find you've added a radius to all the corners :)

Filling a layer with colour can be done differently, you could place a quick Shape rectangle across the background and give it the colour you want, then lock the layer to ensure it isn't affected when working on different areas of your project. Alternatively you could use Layer>New Fill Layer, apply your colour then place it under the background layer.

At the moment there is no way to reset the colours back to black and white but this has been requested previously

In the beta (in the next MAS version release) there will be an customizable keyboard shortcut option to set foreground and background color to B/W and also an option for 50% grey and there is also a keyboard shortcut for filling a layer/ selection with the foreground or background color, it´s something with f5 but I forgot it, it´s definitely there and will be customizable.

At least this is the case for Affinity Photo

thanks for the answers.

So if I wanted to make a pattern that perfectly went around like with pedals and i wanted them to be spaced equally without messing up, how would I do that?

I cannot just duplicate and rotate on a whim, hoping that it will go all the way around in a perfect circle. It might end up spiraling…

…unless i can maybe rotate from the center of the flower… can i rotate on an axis?

Definitely looks like a cool program, but illustrators transform effect is like my favorite thing... that and the plugin Vectorscribe which allows for bending paths  and smart removing extra nodes.... can it do that?

And lastly any black friday deals?
