It would've been useful back when I first brought up this problem. As far I read about CleanMyMac it would display a list of possibly related files before deleting them together with an .app file. Also this tool seems to have some Anti-Malware function, which generally is known to be possibly harmful to the rich macOS internal security features, including its sandbox and regularly hidden auto-updated malware black-lists ("X-Protect", "MRT"). In case you have more 3rd-party system tools installed you might want to check their reliability with the EtreCheck.app ( https://etrecheck.com/ ). It would list all installed apps, daemons, tasks etc and mark possible culprits for further investigation. The app itself is reading only and does not "repair" anything. It will auto-run if you boot in Safe Mode (hold shift until mac's boot sound). Note this checks the basic data structure only, it does not check user related file content (e.g. preference settings, missing files or modified access rights). R C-R
24 minutes ago, fjunk said: I went to launcher instead and am running "First Aid" on this drive. Is there some reason you do not want to try relaunching Finder? It is quick & simple. Quote Is there a way to start this on reboot, before the disk is mounted? If you have another drive you can start up from, you can avoid having to use live mode, which is what causes the system to stop responding until the repair is finished, if that is what you are hoping to avoid, but you have to have an OS of some kind running to use Disk Utility. EDIT: as @thomaso mentioned, you can start up in Safe Mode, which performs something similar to Disk Utility's First Aid, but note that it disables startup items, may disable hardware acceleration (which will cause the screen to redraw very slowly), & may take up to several minutes to complete starting up before you can do anything other than watch the progress bar fill in by fits & starts. Sorry I don't know, you just could try and see what it finds & outputs in its list. fjunk
Thank you for the tip on developer.apple.com. I did most of my support work for Microsoft systems and as such am more familiar with their system than Macs. Haven't been a Mac owner for as long, so much of it is new to me. The first comment I looked at asked, "Why is it no longer being offered at the App Store? In and of itself, not necessarily good or bad. Just checked. Not there. As I write, I'm running it. In case you did not deactivate them in purpose (and/or possibly don't know how to activate again) I recommend to do a clean install of the entire macOS and apps, without using the MigrationAssist.app (to avoid to re-install unhealthy items like app and modified preferences). Also, there seem to be more than CleanMyMac to be related to the system and/or the macOS Finder. At least you could uninstall them and try to live without these various tools helper tools. I know about "Force Quit" and the three key sequence that opens up the window for that. Use it quite a bit. I'm also aware of how to clean up the recently used list files both in Finder and from System Preferences. As, mentioned earlier, I'm new to the Mac system, so more than a few things pass under my radar and over my head. Whatever you might suggest will be appreciated. In which case, just how much should I backup? Without really winding up in the same place? It is always a good idea to backup everything. For Macs, the simplest way to do this is to use Time Machine. It is very easy to set up but it does require having a separate drive that you can back up your files to. Regardless, we need to know if you intentionally disabled the built-in security features before making any more suggestions. In particular, it is not easy to disable SIP, so there is no way you could have done that by accident; so if you did not disable it, this suggests your system has been compromised by some third party, possibly to make it easy to take over by remote control and/or to hide malware already installed on it. First I recommend not to modify anything in macOS which is not meant to be modified by users – at least until the Mac don't feel new and its macOS unknown to you. Yes, in case of this listed major issues I recommend to do a clean installation, starting with initializing the disk first + creating new volumes from scratch. You can backup first your current mac entirely, but I recommend to copy from this backup on a new installation only your user files but no apps and no files from the library folder. At the end of the installation process you will get asked to activate your iCloud account – but you also may do it later (it's written in smaller text). I would recommend to work on local disks only. There is no real necessity to have data permanently auto-copied to a cloud volume or even store them only there. The only reason I would've done that was when I was trying to install Dual Boot Linux. Since then I've discovered that I can use either UTM or Oracle VirtualBox for Linux installs. So, that would be me.

Well, that's going to be awhile. Not until I get around to it. The doing. I've got a two TB drive (Just checked that). That's a lot of disk space. Probably going to have to buy an external drive to be sure I have enough room for a backup as well as Time Machine.

R C-R
56 minutes ago, fjunk said: So, that would be me. Not to put to fine a point on it but basically by disabling SIP & turning off the other security features, your system is not just vulnerable to malware attacks but also vulnerable to your doing things that can cause all sorts of problems that normally the system would prevent you from doing, up to & including removing files essential to the proper operation of the Mac. Additionally, all the extra extensions, 'helpers,' & other items that modify how the OS operates that have been installed multiply greatly the possibility of software conflicts that can cause various kinds of mis-operation, some of which may affect only one or a few apps. So my recommendation is to start over like @thomaso suggested, installing the OS from scratch on a newly initialized disk. Then do not disable anything security related or install any third party helpers or the like until you have researched each of them & you are sure you have a need to use them. Basically, what this means is you are not running any factory standard version of the macOS. Instead, you are running a modified version that few if any other users are running, one that may cause instabilities or unexpected behavior when used with any app it has not specifically been tested against. You are of course free to do this if you want but when asking for help resolving any issues you may have with any app, Affinity or otherwise, it would be a good idea to mention this ASAP when you post your request. There are somewhat standard programs that would qualify as "modified" simply because Apple will flag them on opening requiring a bypass in Security and Privacy such as: OpenSCAD, FreeCAD, and Krita off the top of my head. I'm in the process of making a full Time Machine backup of my 2 TB drive: 1.76 TB (so pretty close to full). After that I'm either going to want to reinstall from the App Store probably to ensure clean versions of the programs and go from there on the rest (several versions of Blender - because it changes so much from one version to the next, NordVPN, some other stuff for blender that comes from PIP a program used to install python based modules for an addon, Java. I've used MacPort and HomeBrew. Is that a problem? Inkscape and Gimp, I think install without a hitch. A few image viewers and video players VLC for example. XNView for images. These are all well used and for the most part widely trusted. Anything you can think of that might be a red flag. I might purchase and install EtreCheckPro. That's where a lot of this info is coming from. Based on input, I'm guessing it might, like CleanMyMac be more useful initially for information than action, depending on whether or not, and how its process differs from CleanMyMac. It did provide considerably more useful info than CleanMyMac, or for that matter someone from another business, listed with BBB who seemed to clean my mac with little more than, as I informed them, I could've done myself. That's another story. Always interested in good information on this, either from any of you out there with more knowledge about Macs than I or good sources like developers.apple.com. Thank you, much. I'm not so smart that I'm loathe to admit what I do not know. And, should I ever have any misgivings about what I do or don't know, there's no shortage of people ready to remind me. Some of them are right. A good number of them are wrong. I try to be a good (and humble) listener. I learn more that way.

What is being flagged as modified are items that run usually faceless background processes that change how the system (the OS, itself) functions. Application programs like Krita, FreeCAD, etc. cannot do that unless they have been hacked & you have been tricked into granting them system system level access privileges. Besides, you do not need to bypass SIP to install apps like FreeCAD or Krita. You just need to follow the procedure mentioned here, in the section named "If you want to open an app that hasn’t been notarized or is from an unidentified developer." fjunk
4 hours later. There were boxes on the shelf of 4 TB, 6 and 10 TB drives. Turns out, all they have in stock are 2 TB drives. It's a chip / distribution problem. I suggested they might consider removing the boxes of the drives they don't have, or at least post a message to the effect that all they have in stock are 2 TB drives. They didn't seem to like either idea. And, as I now know, 2 TB is not enough, even to backup a 2 TB drive not fully being used. So, no "T"ime "M"achine "B"ackup (TMB). --- And, until the chip / distribution problem is resolved, there may not be. Just purchased a 5TB Passport Drive USB 3.1 compatible from Amazon. Should be here next week. We'll see. --- Turns out I already have a 5 TB external drive. After much stupidity trying to get a Mac to read it or reformat it. Turns out, it's formatted for Linux. So, I plugged it into my wife's Linux based laptop and presto, all the files on there show up fine. Offloading them to her Linux Laptop then will try to reformat it or erase it from her Linux box before plugging it back into my Mac and attempting another "T"ime "M"achine "B"ackup (TMB). Life is too short for this.
