Can someone teach me how to do two things?

You can divide a line – or any curve – by using the Node Tool, clicking on the line where you want to divide it to create a new node, and then using the Break Curve button on the Context Toolbar while that new node is still selected.
There may be other ways to do this but the workflows will probably be specific to how you want to divide the line.

You can find the end of a line by looking for the first/last node on that line. (The last node is usually coloured red, rather than the normal blue.)

I don’t have any general advice for finding the middle point of a line but someone else might.
