Affinity Designer Problem: affinity file sent to another computer changes font, sizing and formatting of font

Recommended Posts

Hi I am sending my affinity designer files to a friend who has affinity designer, same font downloaded and is on the same operating system but it is changing the font, the size of the font and the formatting of the font.  I have attached two photos below for you to see.  The right side is the preview and the left is how it looks in her affinity designer program.  What am I doing wrong?  It looks like a totally different font.  Check out the #1 on the first photo.  It also skews the font more to the right and it looks bolder.  I would just like it to show up on her program the way I have made it on mine.  Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity Forums, Jennifer. :)

What font did you use? Do you both have the same version of that font? Does your friend get any error messages upon opening your Designer documents?

It is a different font.

Export to PDF and have your friend do the same. Then use a PDF reader/editor to check the actual font used on the text.

What font?

What operating system?

Which version?
And from where?
You should both have the v3.006 available from Google Fonts now.
Various earlier versions had various errors (some of these are still available on font websites).
Some versions included errors in the font names which could cause this issue.

Please note that the the download from Google Fonts includes a variable font which is not supported by the Affinity apps. You need to install the individual fonts from the ‘static’ folder that you’ll find when you extract the contents of the downloaded zip archive.

The dates for the versions on DaFont and Font Squirrel suggest that they may be older, but I haven’t downloaded them to check the version numbers.

I'll ask where we got it from, I am not sure.  Also, do you know what will happen to the worksheets I have made with version 1.1 after I delete that font and install v3.006.  Should I export and save as PDFs first?  Will I have to go back and fix all the places where I used version 1.1?  I am assuming so, that way our programs can "talk" to each other.  Thanks again for all your help.  I will keep you posted on if it fixes our issues.

@Jennifer23 It is always good to have back-ups. 🙂
But just changing the fonts installed should not damage your documents.
I expect the Font Family name to be the same, so that will not change.
You may have to re-apply the Font Style for some text depending on which style is applied.
It depends on if and/or how the font names were broken in those v1.1 fonts.
If you only used the Regular, it may all be OK.
Or it may work with Regular and Bold. Dunno.
Depends on the fonts and which styles you used.
It all may just work fine.
You will have to see.
But I do expect it to now work correctly and the same on all the computers.
