I wonder if there is a way to explicitely re-genrate Thubnails and Histograms in AP. As you can see in the picture sometimes these don't get generated at all ... sometimes it takes between 10sec and a minute for them to show up.

Edit: I have to correct myself ... in this case it only took 25minutes for the thumbs and histogram to appear. I did not expect they would show up at all ... but eventually they did ..

I usually find that adding a layer to the Layers panel (e.g. Rectangle, blank pixel layer) forces the histogram to update

Likewise, if I delete a layer the histogram updates

Also, in the Levels panel, changing to RGB, Grey, CMYK, LAB (and back) also forces a refresh for me

There may be other (easier) ways to force this refresh

Not sure if the above is applicable if the Levels histogram never shows or is very slow to show the first time (I think there is a bug logged for this)

There are a number of topics on this. All I've heard back from development is that the Photo Persona histograms are not CPU driven whereas the Develop Persona ones are.

Hmm, we are talking Photo Persona here. Not CPU driven means GPU driven? What is the conclusion?

I don't use the Histogram much, but I regularly have thumbnails disappearing.  I assumed at first it was something to do with my configuration/setup, but it's always happened, on both a laptop and desktop. "Solamen miseris socios habuisse doloris"! 🙁

We use the CPU to drive the Histogram in the Develop Persona, which means it's given priority. In the Photo Persona, we do not give a priority order to the CPU to drive the histograms.

The majority of processing is done by the CPU whereas the GPU is primarily used for rendering so this issue has nothing to do with GPU.

Hello,

I use Affinity Photo primarily as a 'pixel editor'. For RAW development, I normally use Capture One. Therefore, I almost never use the Developer persona. I believe that there are many users with the same combo (or maybe a different RAW developer). But I remain convinced that a large group of users (the majority?) uses AP mostly (or even exclusively) in the Photo Persona.

In any pixel editor, it's quite essential that the histogram is updated in real time. How to interpret the  histogram is indeed one of the key editing tools that you'll learn first when you start with photo editing. Therefore, I don't understand why such real time updates are not happening. Also, clicking the button with the exclamation point in the yellow triangle, activating or deactivating the layer or marquee checkboxes, or changing the channels does (most of the time) not trigger a fast update of the histogram.

An argument about performing these updates via the CPU or via the GPU appears to me as irrelevant in this case. I would therefore appreciate a comment whether a fix for this annoying lag in histogram updates is actually scheduled or not.

Many thanks.

Kind regards.

I fully agree with i5963c !

More or less identical situation here .... I use CaptureOne as Raw developer and do the refinement with AP ... So I hardly ever get in touch with the development persona.
But waiting for a histogram or thumbnail for 10 minutes is just inacceptable ... And you may be able to work without the thumbnails in the history but adjusting the levels-layer is simply impossible without the histogram.

And i seriously wonder, why histograms in the pixel persone are supposed to be less important than in the develop persona. Wouldn't it even be easier to handle them the same way?

Cheers, Timo

I'm afraid this is not for me to comment. QA do not know what the developers plan to include in an update until we get given a build to test.

There is an open issue wherein an active selection can cause a dramatic delay in the Histogram updating - do you use selections at all?

I agree - I would like to see this improved at some point. I realise the Histogram is useful to some and if it isn't updating fast enough, it is effectively redundant. I am happy to chase this again.

I agree, an active selection will delay the histogram significantly!

Hi @Chris B,

Of course I do use selections from time to time. However, the unresponsiveness of the Histogram doesn't seem to be related to the use of selections (at least on my system).

Maybe, the situation further deteriorates when selections are active, but, also without selections, the Histogram often doesn't update in 'near real time'. Maybe it happens after a while, but only with significant delays, and by then, I don't keep an eye on it anymore...
