It might be caused by an ongoing issue that Affinity Photo has when Hardware Acceleration is enabled on some user's systems.

To see if you're affected, try disabling the Hardware Acceleration feature (Edit > Preferences > Performance).

Also, check to see if you're system has any 3rd party software which is known to cause trouble with Affinity Photo.

And let us know how you got on.

This seems similar to some problems with pattern layers that were already reported some weeks ago. It looks as if they started to appear with the release of 1.10.0 and continue in the 1.10.1 release.

So far, based on my analysis and some more testing, combined with feedback from other users, it looks as if there might be 2 variants of the crashes:

  • With hardware acceleration ON, the crashes seems to occur only with documents with the CMYK color model.
  • With hardware acceleration OFF, the crashes also happen with all the other color models (RGB-8/16 bit, Gray-6/16 bit, ...).

So, it seems that this is one of the few cases where the Affinity Photo application is more 'stable' with HA switched ON i.s.o. OFF...

From the video attached to the original message in this post, it looks like your document was created with the RGB/8 bit color model. To verify/confirm/deny the hypothesis formulated above w.r.t. the impact of hardware acceleration, can you please let us know whether you've deactivated HA or not?

Thanks.

There are some Pattern fixes in the macOS beta. We're just waiting on Windows now.

Hi @Chris B,

Good to hear that fixes for Pattern layers are underway for Mac users. That doesn't solve the crashes on Windows of course, but hopefully the issues (and therefore the solutions) are similar on both platforms.

Please consider that, according to my tests, there might be 2 flavors of Pattern problems on Windows. Details have been reported in previous posts about this topic. I also summarized them in my message above.

Kind regards.
