Just waiting on my new iPad 9th Gen - which I got on a mint deal through Sky. I was originally going to just go for the WiFi version, but they're offering a cellular one on a 4 year interest free plan + 100MB of data per month and unlimited calls and texts for no additional cost.

Should I have a screen protector on for using the Apple Pencil with it? It's made of glass should in principle it shouldn't scratch (unless I start carving into it with a sharp knife or something)

Not sure whether I should have spent a bit more and gone for the iPad Air (which is also a much more stylish looking tablet) but the interest free deals on Sky take the overall price up to about £750 which is more than twice what I was originally going to spend.

I'm in sRGB space with my HP Monitor and decent graphics card so it might make more sense to stick with that. I'm not sure how much better the gamut would be with the Liquid Retina Wide Colour Display (P3) - as opposed to the older Retina sRGB ones that are still on the basic iPad range?

If it's of any help, I've just "inherited" a five year old iPad from my wife (she's just bought a new one!), she used it a lot with an Apple Pencil, there's no screen protector and the screen is perfect.

Must say the Apple Pencil runs nice and smooth over the screen.

Maybe there is an argument for using the screen covers that feel like paper though?

How often do I need to change the nib? If it wears down can it become rougher on the screen?

I bought a pack of spare tips but I'm still on the original “spare” that came with initial purchase 3-4 yrs ago. Only replaced the first tip after dropping it and damaging the tip. They last for ages if not abused.

Same here. I think we only replaced the tip once in 5 years.

My graphics tablet has a "paper feel" surface, it's OK, but there's not really that much difference to drawing on the smoother iPad screen.

I really like the Apple Pencil - especially the Scribble feature.

But if I can't get this thing to perform basic, simple functions like sending or receiving files via bluetooth or the iCloud then it's going back.

These are basic, standard functions!

I only went back to Apple for the option to take with my work with my on the go - and an iPad was my best option for that.

What specific action(s) are you struggling with? iCloud and Dropbox rarely give issues, Google drive is more problematic but that's Googles api.
Network connections are reliable for file transfers as are mobile broadband connections and mobile phone hotspots.
You can plug in portable storage devices and use them to swap files between Mac/pc/iPad.
Bluetooth? I’ve never used it for 'file' transfers. Is that a 'thing' now?

Hasn't it always been a thing? People share photos on their phones via Bluetooth.

It's a handy technology if there happens to be no internet.

There are no ports on the iPad to insert portable storage devices, I'm not sure iPads or iPhones have ever had this functionality - which makes Bluetooth all the more important for file transfer. Apple don't want their customers to use any other computer technology apart from theirs though..

You can airdrop files and photos between Apple products with no internet. You can run free software such as Easus on your pc and plug in your iPad/iPhone and transfer/backup content directly.

They are few restrictions these days.

The current basic iPad is still using the lightning connecter. Good to know there are options, but being set back having to buy cables and/or adaptors or having to use third party software isn't what I expect from Apple. They sell their products as being super slick and easy to use but some of the issues I've experienced since getting my new device is a bit of a joke.

Moving from a Windows operating system to an Apple OS there are unfortunately going to be many differences. Apple love their cloud based services and default to using iCloud in many instances. I personally don’t like to depend on cloud services so had to change many of the default settings in iOS, particularly on mobile data as standard settings chew through data at an enormous rate.

I don't think the issues/problems I'm experiencing are down to me being unfamiliar with the new OS. I have used Apple before in the past, and I regularly do stuff for my Mum on her iPad.

You know what. I'm really regretting buying this thing now. Day 3 and more problems.

I used to have Bluetooth connectivity issues all the time with my Apple Mouse and Keyboard, and just now I went to use the Apple Pencil and it's not working. I picked it up this morning after it was sitting overnight and it worked straight away. It says it's connected. I've plugged it into the lightning slot twice and it just won't work!

How many times do I have to plug this thing into the iPad anyway? I would have thought ONCE and then after that it would just recognise it?

EDIT - it was a loose tip. I looked around for solutions and this one came up. You need to keep the tip screwed on tight..
