I have a document with two columns, one is in Czech, the other is English. So I discovered that in setting up a Text Style that I could choose the language to spell check. So I set up one for Czech and one for English. It was working perfectly for the first 1/3 of the document. Then I did the latest Mac security update and the Czech spell-check stopped working. The English seems fine.  I have tried various things - resetting the Text Style for the column, closing and opening again, etc. I was so happy to have this feature, and now it's gone. Help!

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums.

  1. If you double-click to put the text cursor in some of the Czech text where Spell Check isn't working, you should be able to see in the Context Toolbar what Paragraph and/or Character Text Styles are applied to that text. Are they styles you expect?
  2. With the cursor still in place, you can look in the Character studio panel, and toward the bottom there is a Language section. What Spelling Language is specified?
  3. Also, you can right-click on the applicable Text Style in the Text Styles panel, and choose Edit "style name" from the context menu. What Spelling language is shown in that Text Style?

Feel free to supply screenshots. Also, if you can, feel free to supply part of your document as a sample, including at least part that works properly, and part that doesn't, as a .afpub file for us to examine.

Thanks for the suggestions. I appreciate the response. I have checked all of the Styles in various ways in various sections of this.  My problem is that it was working wonderfully over several days of saving, opening, closing. The only thing different in this scenario is that I saved and quit to run the Mac security update. When I opened the file again no errors showed up .... no I'm not that good, I don't speak or write Czech. At the time neither did the English side show errors. I changed one entry on the English side and the errors showed up again (mostly people's names) all through that column. I tried this on the Czech side but only the word I changed came up as an error, and I know there are multiple errors that are still there.

An update:  I have now copied the text again from Pages where I originally had transcribed it and pasted it into a new doc that only has a 1 column Czech Text Style set up exactly as the other one was. This is the same method of transfer used on the other doc. It works in this new one, and reluctantly I will go this route for now for checking reasons (I need to keep plugging away on this). And then re-paste again into the columns (I'm pretty good at coming up with work-arounds). I did try re-pasting a portion of the Czech part in to the original 2 column doc again and applying the Text Style with no change.

Background: I am transcribing my father-in-law's accounts of his immigration to the United States in 1922 written on a typewriter with no diacriticals. It is a personal letter that I don't feel comfortable sharing. I am also a long-time Mac User and have used Quark XPress and Adobe InDesign in the past since I edit a quarterly publication. I switched that publication to Publisher which I'm pretty happy with (please get footnotes!!). I wanted to try this layout for this letter because of having columns not linked on the same page, but to a continuing column on the next page so I could have the translation side-by-side. And it worked beautifully until this one glitch.

Are you using the Czech dictionary from https://github.com/LibreOffice/dictionaries?

MacOS Big Sur?
(I can't help you much as I don't use Big Sur. But MacOS security updates can often break certain things that used to work. My experience as a Mac user since more than 30 years…)

English is built in. Czech isn't.

That can get complicated if you don't speak Czech. Many words can massively change their meaning depending on diacritics used.

I'd definitely recommend finding a trustworthy person that is a native Czech speaker with at least some experience in translating if you want accurate results. Czech is a very complex language. (Disclosure: I'm native Czech with experience in translating, including e.g. poetry)

Thank you, loukash. I am doing this for my personal use and for family. If I were doing something more than that I would definitely get someone like you to do this. My mother-in-law had someone translate letters from his family for her back in the 80s. Having been doing family research in Czech Republic records I do know how complicated having the wrong diacritical or spelling can be.

I am less concerned about having a "perfect" translation than in the fact that sometimes I have had text styles change for no apparent reason. I had minor issues with the publication that I edit where one text box would change from the set Text Style to something random when it had been set and not worked with for a while. Those were much more easily changed. This one bothered me because I couldn't use some of my "fixes" that I'd tried before on other things, and the Catalina update was right in the middle before it glitched.

Thank you for the link to the dictionary. I will take a look and add it to my "library" of Czech translating because I use those for the family history records too.

UPDATE: OK, people, today I opened the 2 column file and voilá the Czech correction feed was back. I wish I knew what triggered it, because I had tried a bunch of stuff. I have been working from the single page version. Now I will transfer my corrections to the 2 column page.
